mike it is all up to the slave. She is the one that accepts the Master/Mistress and in making that choice he/she sets the standard of his/her treatment. The slave enters the negotiations with 100% of the power. This he/she then surrenders to the Master/Mistress retaining only .01% of the power i.e. the power to leave if the rights are violated.
 IMO YMMV

BreakMe... I agree with you.  The point I was trying to make is that in the everyday living of your life, within a functional relationship, it almost does not matter.  There is so much more to it than what "rights" someone has or does not have. It is all about making a good choice of partner, where the fit is good.

edited to say I dont believe I bit into this, my head aches already

It's okay darling. Just another one of those things that makes the bandwidth go down.

Are we doing this one again?  Slaves don't have rights.  That's what being a slave means, and it's why slavery is outlawed in the U.S.A.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I was thinking.

from all that i've heard, learned and read, slaves, once collared, surrender all rights and belong fully to their Master/Mistress. the only right they have remaining is the right to beg for release. slaves aren't allowed limits either, as far as i've heard.

Here I would beg to differ with what you have learned. I am a slave, and yet I have the SAME exact limits now that I did three years ago when Master collared me. These were limits that we had discussed BEFORE HAND, and ones that we both agreed were not to be crossed.

my problem is with the definition of the word "rights".

i feel i have the "right" to do anything i want ... however, that also means that i have to face the consequences.

i have the right to break the rules ... and then, i have the right to be punished and i have a choice of either facing that punishment like a big girl or crying and whining and making Master unhappy with me.

Yes, everything anyone does is a choice.

As a slave, my primary goal is to make Master's life easier. If Master deiceds that He does not want to micromanage and makes me responsible for some upkeep and decisions then i am so.

i am Master's property but Master expects me to take care of His property emotionally, mentally and physically. Master has made clear that i am expected to take responsibility for my upkeep ... and along with responsibility come rights. i could not accept the responsibility if i did not have rights to be able to use to fulfill the responsibility.

The only real choice that i have is to walk away but by the same token the only thing that Master can truly force me to accept is His walking away.

Someone who roles plays a slave, has the right to find one who will cater to it.

Real slaves don't even have that much.

I'd say that "all you've heard, learned and read" is a bunch of masculine bovine excrement.  Each successful BDSM relationship, whether it's called "Owner/slave," "Dominant/submissive," Top/bottom" or "switch/switch," is individual and unique.  There is no blueprint for such relationships.  There is no comprehensive rule book for them.

And, I kind of wonder how "all you've heard, learned and read" can say this, since you've been on these boards for a couple of months during which time I've heard, read (and posted) a whole lot that contradicts these points.

I had the right to waive all my rights.. and so I did. There is the law of the land and the law of the Master. I follow the law of the Master who follows 'most' of the laws of the land.

These days I'm in to lefts as I have no needs of rights.

Seems that Roman slaves did have rules governing their treatment, would those be thought of as rights?

Is it legal somewhere else?

michael, there's no law telling people what slaves should or shouldn't and so forth. sure the safety crowd makes a lot of noise about unacceptable behaviour, but when it comes down to it, the relationship is between the people involved.

the slaves' rights are limited by the master's personal preference. as a master you are supposed to know for a fact what you will and will not allow. if you don't, it's no big deal, but you aren't a master yet.

knowing what you will and will not allow permits you to make it very clear to the slave what they will be getting into. they may chose to walk or they may chose to submit. it is their choice. a choice enabled by your knowledge and preference.

this is how the problem is solved. there's nothing to argue with the slave, and especially you can't be going to them and say, look, the CM community agrees your rights should be or shouldn't be this or that.

decide who you want to be. formalize it as much as possible. put it in the open. wait.

My experience and perception is that it is negotiate thru communication and trust.

One might have all the pages of a mutually agreed contract filled out and signed but if one walks away...how does one enforce it realisticly?

To Me it is an evolving relationship that enhances two individuals for betterment thru an exchange of power that BOTH agree on and wish to continue.

Who in their right minds would ask to belong to someone who isn't good for them?

When you're as sure as you can be that this is the case, the issue of *rights* becomes academic, really.

One man's submissive is another man's slave.

Anyone believing in a concrete, carved-in-stone definition of either, has yet to grok the fullness.
