If a person is a doctor, lawyer or Indian chief and talks about medicine, the law or Native American culture, we should take what they say seriously. But if that same person (doctor, lawyer, Indian chief) is overweight, then we should view their statements with the awareness that in this ONE area, they are an addict. A food addict. Even though legal, food addiction is one of the most difficult to overcome. A smoker can eschew tobacco...a crack addict can never go near cocaine, but food...??? It's like telling a heroin addict to lessen their intake of 'horse' by 25% and they'll be okay. (Btw, people with money-oriented disorders face a similar dilemma). Addicts can be quite rational about every other topic, but when it comes to their own addiction we'll say ANYthing. People need to know that.

People with this addiction (like any addiction) should not be shamed, but should not be enabled either. People on this board who see themselves as open minded, etc. aren't doing the obese any favors. Even though I keep myself in good shape, I struggle with this addiction ALL day, EVERY day.

Don't berate us, but don't coddle us either.

Skier, I agree with what you said and as an Alcoholic (recovering) I can understand what you're talking about.
Did you have an eating disorder? Your pictures don't show it!

Is food addiction a part of DSM IV now?
I know there are people with anorexia and bulimia, but never thought those were food addiction illnesses as much as an extreme anxiety/self image illness.

I must say your posts mostly make me laugh skier because you sound so moralistic/preachy/self righteous. M

Unfortunately, you're right. I DO sound moralistic/preachy/self-righteous. I take this health issue seriously and am not clever enough to be able to present ideas about this addiction in a humorous manner. If I could, I would.

(In my defense, I'll say that in my personal life, I'm very supportive of women who are trying to cope with this problem).

I was married to what most would consider a model. She should have been. That was my body type preference since young adulthood through my late 30's. Make the assumptions...she met them.

I got divorced (hence, body type doesn't make for happiness...only good staple placement), got back into the dating scene, met some remarkable women, two of which were overweight.

Both of which I fell head over heels for.

One could have been best described as a Dolly Parton type (that was good...every man that's ever had a fantasy about Dolly...lemme tell you...it's a good thing :) ) the other could best be described as a woman who best fulfills every fantasy every considered (times 3 katrillion)...but in a size 18.

To this day she, in every instance, epitomizes pure, unadulterated, oooozing, sex...and I will never look at a size 4 the same way again.

(In fact...I will never again pursue a size 4....ever).

Big girls...oh yeah...I'm all over that :)

however, we haven't banned fatties from public buildings, although they get into everyone's way.
we don't force macd to sell it's junk with one square yard of labelling, to the tune of "this is not food, it's shit, and it's gonna kill you"
we don't tax 99% of the value of a lard packet.
we don't badger fatasses if caught in public. (well, maybe we do some, but not nearly enough)

i think we should.

You remind me of one of those guys on the back of comic books that gets sand kicked in his face, and you are just bitter you can't put on muscle or fat like a normal person.. but then again, that is just an assumption of why you are so meanspirited and nasty... I have a gym membership and perhaps I could show you how to lift to build some heft to that slight frame.. I like thin men, but bony is a whole nother story. (I know according to my profile you wouldn't be interested in me either, you are afraid I could beat you up with my superior muscle tone)... Yes I am being mean back at ya...

You would have to be over 100 pounds overweight for that statement to be true.. meaning morbidly obese, not just fat. So I am disputing that "fact" which I researched when I quit smoking.. guess what, no one ever hurt me with secondhand eating.

Skier, you're right about that, it is a very serious health problem and now according to the news this week "the Nation's number one killer."
I'm not fat at all but every single time I go to the dr's office (The V.A.) it's; "you need to lose 10 lbs Mr Porter."
and "your cholesterol is too high."
And, "your blood pressure is too high, you need to lose weight."

when you get kicked out of a building for lighting one cigarette, nobody asks if you are going to be smoking two or twenty packs. they don't look if it's a cigar, a cigarillo, a slim, a light.

why should be fat people be treated differently than smokers ? why apply degrees for some that we don't for others ? it's bad for you, fine. we decide to clamp on things that are bad for you ? fine. why not do it uniformly ?
