Status: offline 		I heard, on British TV (and said by a comedian - Stephen Fry - so I take it with a pinch of salt) that when you leave certain stores in the USA these days, some assistant will say not just 'Have a nice day!' but 'Miss you already!'

- Please tell me that this isn't true. If it is, how the hell can you put up with it? I think I'd punch the assistant in question. It's loathsome. I understand now why you Americans have guns and the death sentence.

I can't stand this platitude. Thanks Peon for giving me an addition to the profile thread.

This is a completely useless statement to my mind, it just grates on me. It seems to be used by people that aren't in favor of working at things, instead they shrug their shoulders and say "It is what it is." No...it's not. Make it into something else or leave it behind.

There is one thing in the world that I'd probably concede that it is what it is....my mother.

My favorites are:

I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around this one. I mean, I certainly have a great fear
of heights, (especially if it involves driving over a bridge with 18 wheelers on each side of me!!)
and I really don't want to be afraid of driving over the bridge, but I am not afraid to be afraid.

I've heard this one before, and I'm never quite sure what I think about it. It seems to assume that everyone's in a position to decide what to accept, and I have my doubts about that.

Makes you wonder, doesn't it? Could you imagine, say, a man being charged by an enraged rhinoceros, standing there and pondering whether his fear of the rhino is legitimate, or in fact whether he should get over some entirely useless and irrelevant fear within himself?

I think a lot of these bits of 'wisdom' were invented by parents of children that they didn't, deep down, want to remain alive for very much longer.

The "fear" one is actually from FDR's first inaugural address in 1933. It makes more sense, I think, in the context of the whole paragraph. The new President sought to rally Americans' Depression-weary spirits.

The way my mother used it, and I do, is in reference to a personal relationship. If a date says they'll pick you up at 7:00 and doesn't show till 8:30, then how you respond will determine if they keep treating you as unimportant and therefore can be stood up without consequence.

If you don't want to be just a booty call, then say no.

"The early bird catches the worm."

The reason it is my all time favorite is because the critically important yet never mentioned corollary is:

"The early worm gets caught".

When you bring the two together, the message becomes rather hazy! Except for the obvious "It is better to be a bird than it is to be a worm".

I think this one is the difference between the kind of fear that we inflict upon ourselves (which is what we should fear - our own lack of self trust - rather than the kind you are talking of. you are talking about fearing things that are worthy of being feared - dangerous things.

Until I had actually fallen in love and lost that relationship, I didn't understand or appreciate it. Now I know 100% it is correct. I'd rather know I'm capable and that my life was in beautiful bold colors because of the love I've had. Before that, I had experienced lovely pastel colors. Truly lovely, but not the gorgeous jewel tones that love brought to me. I didn't know what I was missing. Now, even though I'm single, I have wonderful memories to hold onto and lessons that I've learned.

Peon, I think it actually means that regardless of how you want it to be, it is not necessarily that. It is the thing that it is, and if you can't change it or you have no power over it, the best thing is to accept it. You DO have power over changing yourself. I find that one rather calming. It helps me get clear about where the line is for MY responsibility.
