The 150 years ago thread on the other hand has people disagreeing without resorting to insult.

Yeah, but my point is that we can call the people right there.
We can say, hey, ease up on the "president pantload" comments.
Usually, the post is a mix, some content (Of varying quality, but what the hell, at least it's content and points of discourse) coupled with some slander, diatribes or attacks.
Then no need for the mods.

Course, this has about as much chance of occurring as I do of growing wings and becoming a Watchman. It would just degenerate into a did not/did so thing that would carry on forever

I have tried that and it degenerated exactly as you suggested.

When people see that some posts were yanked for offenses that were allowed to stand in other threads, they complain that the Mods are corrupt, biased, and generally unsavory examples of human beings. Whereupon, of course, it is explained for the zillionth time that the Mods are only volunteers who are doing their best, that they are not salaried staff who are paid to watch the site 24/7 reviewing every post, and that violations need to be reported. Then, when people report violations, the whining starts about debate being stifled.

Sometimes I think I could make a fortune selling diapers around here.

If that was an insult I am a victim of character assassination many times over and have never filed a complaint.
Some people are really touchy I had complaints filed by two of the most offensive people I have talked too both when I responded in kind.

To me, what makes that an insult is questioning someone's intelligence. Calling someone a "gash".. well.. we all know what that means. Meh, I can be a bitch, so I dont take insult at that. But I am far from stupid.
