AthenaSurrenders -> RE: Reinventing starting with a name... (7/23/2013 11:15:06 AM)

Some nice suggestions - my one thought is I would probably avoid any uncommon name that has more than two syllables, or isn't spelled phonetically. I'm assuming you want potential clients to remember you, jot the name down, read it from an ad, say it over the phone etc. The less familiar, the less likely they will remember it. There are some lovely names here but a lot of them I know would pop right out of my head, or I'd have trouble pronouncing them if I saw it written down. It defeats the object of being the only stylist with that name if you're also the stylist no one remembers.

On that note, I like older names which are out of fashion, but which people will have heard before. Everyone I've met with that type of name I've initially thought 'wow, that's old fashioned' and grown to find it really individual and pleasant. Nancy, Penelope, Vanessa, Coral, Janine, Ava, Astrid, Irene, Lucille. Classy but quirky.

Whatever it is, make sure you can say it without feeling self conscious.

Edit: ok after looking at your photos I'm getting strong, fun and bold. I think you need a short name with a kick to it. Keeping with the mythology theme, how about Nike? (Nye-kee)

Thank you all for your great input! I really like "Thalia" and the idea of a name themed in the Greek Muses. So far I've turned in "Zephyr" "Thalia" "Olympia" and "Calypso"

ianthe

tommonymous -> RE: Reinventing starting with a name... (7/25/2013 6:49:59 AM)

I like Thalia, good choice.

Wasn't there a Bond Girl named Calypso? Maybe not...

theshytype -> RE: Reinventing starting with a name... (7/25/2013 6:55:58 AM)

Pirates of the Carribean had a Calypso. I believe.

tommonymous -> RE: Reinventing starting with a name... (7/26/2013 9:29:11 AM)

Maybe that's what I was thinking of...

OP, will you let us know how your name game ends?

hlen5 -> RE: Reinventing starting with a name... (7/26/2013 12:02:23 PM)

How about a "muse" name for a muse??

ETA: I guess I should have read the thread before I posted something redundant!

FR and a jumpthrough.... to OP

You should have filled out a profile before asking that question. All there is to go by is a picture. I came up with :

Harrietta Rose

If you want to know how or why, so would I. I have no idea whatsoever. Use it if you want.

Why not "Aphrodite"? in keeping with the Greek theme that Steven began. Unless I'm mistaken, she was the Goddess of beauty and knowledge? Surely, that can't be too common a name?

I was thinking that too. Another related name might be Helene or Helena, variations on Helen, whose beauty reportedly launched a thousand ships.

FR

I've always thought Azalea would be a lovely name.

Alexandra was reportedly bookies' favorite name had young George been a girl. Britain's Queen Alexandra (wife of Edward VII) was beautiful--and not unaware of it.

Delilah is certainly apt for a hair stylist, but you might scare off male customers.

dcnovice -> RE: Reinventing starting with a name... (7/26/2013 3:26:45 PM)

Since Vogue is part of your nick, maybe the names of the last few editors-in-chief (and only women to hold the job) might offer inspiration:

Diana Vreeland
Grace Mirabella
Anna Wintour

I think Mirabella (which was also the name of a fashion magazine) has a lovely ring to it.

I know we don't know each other on a personal basis but if somehow it came to be your choice to name me what would you call me?

I need to pick a name for beauty school. They say if there is another stylist on the floor with the same name it could be confusing for clients during re-booking, so they'd like to avoid that by giving us a chance to come up with new names. I've been racking my brain but nothing really seems to fit. Any suggestions? Please be nice.

I actually do know you...well....somewhat.

I did a little research on you, and from what little I know, online, well.....I'll be over in about an hour.

I'd like a pizza and 2 cold beers.

Please don't make me tell everyone your address.

Pizza....hot...beer....cold.

(Thank you).

Cash would be a nice addition.

heartcream -> RE: Reinventing starting with a name... (7/26/2013 9:07:22 PM)

Before I read all the fancy shmancy names I thought your name would be Peggy <3

DarkSteven -> RE: Reinventing starting with a name... (7/26/2013 9:12:16 PM)

And another Muse name would be Beatrice, who served as Dante's muse.

dcnovice -> RE: Reinventing starting with a name... (7/28/2013 7:32:35 AM)

What name did you finally pick?
