I thought this was rather funny.

quote:

John Morillo told The Windsor Star that Monday night’s swim from Windsor, Ontario, to Detroit, was “really stupid” and said in retrospect he shouldn’t have done it. He was cited for being intoxicated in a public place and released from jail Tuesday.

“I was drinking, but I wasn’t really drunk,” Morillo, 47, of Windsor, said Tuesday. “The thing is, I’ve been telling people I’m going to swim across the river for years and they’re like ’yah, yah, blah, blah, you can’t make it.’ So, I don’t know, last night I just decided it was the time to go.”

Morillo made it across to Detroit, getting out of the water near downtown’s Renaissance Center, and was swimming back when he was found about 12:50 a.m. Tuesday by the U.S. Coast Guard.

“The harbour master was extremely mad at me,” Morillo told the Windsor Star. “I don’t know, maybe they pulled him out of bed or something.”

Why would someone want to swim to Detroit anyway? Maybe he heard the city was having problems and wanted to help out?

I think that says it all.

tj444 -> RE: Drunken Canadian Swims Across Detroit River (7/24/2013 8:45:04 AM)

it does sound funny..

I would be most worried about accidentally swallowing some of that water.. havent they found mutant fishies in the water there?.. [:D]

Marc2b -> RE: Drunken Canadian Swims Across Detroit River (7/24/2013 11:39:10 AM)

It could have been worse... he could have tried to swim across the Niagara River.

One if by land and two if by sea.............

WTF is this country coming to where we are surprise invaded by drunken Canucks?

We need to review the defense budget.

They're pretty easy to get rid of. Just point behind them and yell "ohhh noooo! The Tim Horton's is on fire!" That'll turn them around in a panic every time.

mnottertail -> RE: Drunken Canadian Swims Across Detroit River (7/24/2013 12:18:34 PM)

Thankies, eh?

I'm not sure. I remember years ago when they said Lake Eire was dead, but now I've heard that they're spotting life there again. Still, I don't think I'd want to drink any of that water.

It also said he may be fined between $5000 and $25000 for swimming in a shipping channel, in addition to public intoxication. It didn't say if they were charging him with entering the United States illegally.

Pollution is not nearly a bad a problem as it used to be. The big problem today is invasive species.

DesFIP -> RE: Drunken Canadian Swims Across Detroit River (7/24/2013 1:53:27 PM)

He was almost back to Canada when the Coast Guard picked him up. Apparently he's lucky to have made it since the currents are supposed to be dangerous.

I guess this is another example of fools rush in where angels fear to tread.

The currents in the Niagara River are very dangerous, that's for sure. Actually, the real idiots seem to non local boaters who get to close to the falls. You'd think the large signs saying: NIAGARA FALLS FIVE MILES AHEAD! TURN BACK NOW! would dissuade them but nope, some of 'em have to try their luck.

Meh. As long as they bear to the left, they have a chance. It's the American Falls that are the real meat-grinder. No one's survived going over that side. The Canadian side is a little bit nicer, other than the big pile of rocks at the bottom. There was a guy a couple years ago who got caught trying to cross in the US in one of those cheapo inflatable boats. Something about it being cheaper to pay his credit card bill from the US side as opposed to from the Canadian side or something like that. Happens a lot here.

Termyn8or -> RE: Drunken Canadian Swims Across Detroit River (7/24/2013 7:44:50 PM)

FR

I don't see what the guy did wrong. Even if he was drunk, so what. He turned right around so he didn't really enter the country.

I wouldn't have even stopped for the coast guard, tell them go fuck off and just dive for a minute. Keep on trucking. Hmmm, trucking might not be the best word here .... (in fact how did they evn now he was there ?)

Somebody has a little bit of a sense of adventure and everyone gets all bent out of shape. Beam me up scotty, this planet is inhabited by,,,,,

squanks ? I can't think of an animal as ridiculous right now.

And don't start this "Oh he could've drown" shit. If he did, so what.

At least he went out DOING SOMETHING rather than hooked up to a machine or some shit.

Like one time through no fault of my own I got into a little scuff. (well, a little racing but....) She says "OMG there's blood all over you !". I said "Yeah, don't get any on your clean clothes".

People are such pussies.

DesFIP -> RE: Drunken Canadian Swims Across Detroit River (7/24/2013 8:01:50 PM)

He did get out on the U.S. side. Pictures were taken. The Coast Guard went out to rescue him. I hope they charge him for their cost.

Was he ever in distress? I didn't see the article say so.

Isn't that river so polluted that one can just walk across?

just wondering,

Pollution requires industry, which is sadly lacking in Motown at the moment. I imagine that river may be starting to clean itself up by now. Now if the factories were clanking away, he wouldn't be giving interviews-he'd be on life support with most of his skin sloughing off in clumps.
