I'm hoping he recovers fully. I work in a hospital, infection are becoming harder to treat. Tell him to make sure he takes all his antibiotics, eat healthy, and take care of himself!

I am so sorry both of you are going through this hard time. I had a similar situation with an implanted device, and an infection that could never be permanently cured. Once an implanted device has been infected, the bacteria form a film around it that keeps the antibiotics from totally clearing it up. The infection just springs back up as soon as the antibiotics are stopped. Getting a second or third opinion is important. There are risks of implanting another device immediately after the first is removed, because there is such a high probability of just getting the new device infected, also. No matter how much he may want to keep the device, there comes a point when the vicious cycle becomes so painful that he may be ready to let it go. I hope he heals soon.
