I highly recommend going over this checklist before tying yourself up. Even the best of us tend to overlook small things every now and then – online message boards are full of stories about people getting stuck in bondage because they locked their handcuffs the wrong way, etc. If you print this page and go over it every time you do self-bondage, you’ll avoid getting stuck!
1. Are you using new restraints? If so, practice unlocking them.
2. If you’re using handcuffs, make sure to double-lock them.
2a. The keyhole must always face your hands!
3. Do you have any drugs or alcohol in your system? If you do, don’t tie yourself – or do a mild tie with your hands in front. Do not use a gag.
4. Using a gag? Make sure to leave some slack so you can push it out with your tongue if you start choking.
5. Lock and unlock all your padlocks to make sure you have the right keys.
6. Test your release mechanism to make sure it goes off. If you can’t test it (block of ice, etc), set up a backup release mechanism.
7. If you put on a collar, make sure it’s not too tight.
8. No ropes, leashes or nooses around the neck! The only exception is a loose collar that’s not connected to anything.
9. Make sure you have an emergency key release.
10. Do not suspend or hang yourself.
11. Have fun!

This is a great post, thank you for sharing. I hope you share more insight from your books. I wonder how long it will be before the "CM hens" come and ask you if your rent is due and come down on you for using the forums as a way to generate interest in your for-profit ventures that are obviously not simply a community service. Or is it different for male subs?

We generally stay under the radar.

I figured I'd share this particular excerpt due to the spike in handcuff "accidents" in London and, presumably, here in the States. There's a 99% chance that an overly enthusiastic vanilla with handcuffs won't even bother googling for safety tips, but if they do... You never know how big of a butterfly effect you generate online, where threads are accessible for years, if not decades.

Great thread, I have had a few close calls over the years like many others. Having keys on bits of string can really help with a panicky fumbling hands too.

If you freeze your keys in a block of ice they usually rust, so have spares... (or just don't do it lol)

Having a phone in reach for emergencies

Safety scissors (having had to chew my way out once would recommend, though never had to use them)

Maybe we could get his book added to the reading list.

When using handcuffs you might also consider using "training keys". They are short keys that have a knob on the end of them... just grasp the knob and turn. They are also magnetic so when inserted they stay in place. Much easier than fumbling around with a regular key.

You know, I've been screwing around with self-bondage most of my life, but I have never heard of handcuff training keys before. I've learned something today!

The problem is that the people who need this guide the most (poor schmucks who will start experimenting after finishing "50 Shades of Grey" and get stuck) probably won't shell out another $10 for training keys, let alone wait for them to arrive.
