How Putin's move could help Snowden and U.S.

quote:

After five and a half weeks in transit limbo, NSA leaker Edward Snowden was granted temporary one-year asylum in Russia on Thursday.

The White House expressed "disappointment" and again raised the threat of possibly canceling the meeting between President Barack Obama and President Vladimir Putin next month when the U.S. president is scheduled to travel to Russia for the G-20 meeting in St. Petersburg.

But just how disappointed should Washington be with this development?

An interesting perspective, as the author seems to think that the situation can still be salvaged without impacting too negatively on US-Russian relations.

Lucylastic -> RE: Snowden Gains Temporary Asylum in Russia (8/2/2013 9:00:03 AM)

I was just reading my news ticker, it said, "Putin allows Asylum for Snowden, on condition that he stops leaking documents."
I had to laugh

Wow! really? and no one saw this coming??? [sm=rofl.gif]

The US isnt gonna do squat.. the US has no power over other countries that dont give a shite about wtf the US wants.. the US will just stomp its feet and roll around on the floor crying and screaming for a while... then it will go to its toy bin and play with one of its other dollies..

In a few months, there'll be a 'tragic accident', or else the CIA just contracts some Russian mobsters for a hit. He's done for, now. Uncle Sugar ain't afraid of wet work when it's necessary.

From what I've read, life generally turns out pretty bad for US defectors who go to Russia. Some of them end up wanting to come back to the United States.

It seems apparent that Snowden has already shot his wad and has done all the damage he can do. We have to assume that the Russians have probably gotten all they're going to get from him, so he's probably not any practical use to them any longer, except as a bargaining chip or for anti-U.S. propaganda purposes. If he dies under mysterious circumstances, then it would look even worse for the U.S. and could make a martyr out of him.

I think the best thing for U.S. officials to do at this point is cut their losses and let Snowden stay in Russia and fade into obscurity. Sooner or later, he may want to come back to the United States.

This would take on a whole other twist if Snowden had been gay- or decides he rather have a bf then a gf.

A tragic comedy. It's a complete role-reversal. We used to protect their whistle blowers with asylum, not they protect ours.

or it shows how far the US has fallen?.. I am not just talking about Snowden either, but also what they did to Rosen, Ap & other computer hacking.. trying to shut up reporters also, not just whistleblowers.. and of course labeling OWSers as "domestic terrorists".. its an entire attack on anyone that wants to exercise their (supposedly protected) right to free speech & association & assembly.. to oppose the govt in any way, or/and to expose the govt's wrong doing.. Its more than sad.. its a hint to what the future will bring.. jmo

kdsub -> RE: Snowden Gains Temporary Asylum in Russia (8/2/2013 11:09:01 AM)

I'm sure he will no longer give out damaging information to the US... But... if he doesn't want the Russians to turn him over to the US he will give any and all information to the Russians. If I were the former head of the KGB I would do the same.

If you want to be free to give out secrets and be a whistleblower tj then don't ask to be paid to be given them. It just makes you a whore.

I guess strikes me about this whole thing is that the U.S. government really, really wants Snowden back badly, as exemplified by the rather strong rhetoric coming from Washington towards Moscow on this issue. He's not the first U.S. citizen to defect to another country, nor is he the first government employee to reveal classified information. These things happen, and the more our officials bark about it, the more embarrassing it gets.

I agree it's sad what the government is doing overall, but the way they're stomping they're feet and throwing an international tantrum over this makes it seem like they're losing their composure and sense of perspective. I don't where all this zeal to get this guy is coming from, but I do wonder about that. Shouldn't our politicians and diplomats be working on more important things right now? Why do they care so much about this guy that they're taking up all this time, energy - and even risking not attending the G-20 summit? It's ludicrous.

Never heard that Snowden was selling any secrets, as I am sure you imply. If not, then he is merely a whistle blower. If he is selling it, he becomes a mercenary.

Snowden didn't meet with a Chinese, Russian, North Korean, or Turkish spook in some back alley. He told the US citizens and the entire world just how far off the reservation the US Government has gone. He broke Omerta and for that, he will eventually be the victim of a tragic accident.

It's no different than the guy that first broke the area 51 news or McVeigh. He needs to be compromised and unless one of the more powerful governments on the planet really want to keep him safe for some reason, he's a goner.

It's too bad he can't speak French. The frenchies have been hiding terrorists over there for 30 years. One whistle-blower shouldn't take too much effort.

Marcel Marceau

Wait, didn't the Democrats advertise Obama as a great foreign policy "expert" and knower of all things? Not only is Putin giving Obama the finger, he is rubbing Obama's face in it in front of the whole world!

Don't know when Chris Matthews and the rest of the Libs are finally going to see, the Emperor has no clothes!

Hell, the French would be more interested in the wardrobe and cleavage for that matter...of his whores.

Your strawman. Presidents do what they need to do...to stay alive.

Oh but I agree with all likewise thinking antagonists....Snowden may now have a short life-expectancy. Russia is easy.

Putin will keep Snowden alive and use him every chance he can to humiliate Obama and show the world whos the man! With all the countries, including Russia, China, Germany, etc., ramping up their military, still think cutting our military and depending on Obama's "diplomatic skill" is a good idea?

Russia gives Snowden asylum, Putin gives Obama giant wedgee.

You know, given the choice between spending the rest of my life in Russia or in a US Federal Penitentiary, I'd have a very hard time deciding.
