(Reuters Health) - Some good news for people who enjoy restraints, riding crops and floggers in the bedroom: A new study says you probably don't have a mental disorder.

The results "seem contradictory to what the general public and professionals believe," said Andreas Wismeijer of Tilburg University in the Netherlands, who published the study along with Marcel van Assen.

Previous studies had suggested that BDSM activities were linked to mental disorders and vulnerability to abuse, according to the researchers, who published their results in The Journal of Sexual Medicine.

But in the new study, researchers found people who like BDSM, which stands for bondage-discipline, dominance-submission and sadism-masochism, were well adjusted and reported slightly better wellbeing than people who don't take part in those activities.

"We do have a lot of academic literature that's finding these positive things and not finding harmful characteristics," said Dr. Beverly Stiles, who has studied BDSMers but was not involved with the new research.

"The people that identify as being part of the (BDSM) subculture, this is who they see themselves as in their core," said Stiles, chair of sociology at Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas.

"There have been a number of studies in Finland and other places that basically concluded that there was no more or less psychopathology (or mental illnesses) among those who practice BDSM compared to control groups," said Dr. Richard Krueger, who researches sexual behavior but wasn't involved in the new study.

"They were fairly well adjusted or better functioning," said Krueger, an associate clinical professor of psychiatry at the Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons.

The authors recruited 902 BDSM practitioners and 434 people who don't take part in BDSM activities through advertisements to take surveys.

The questionnaire asked about BDSMers' personality, wellbeing and how they handle attachment and rejection.

Overall, BDSMers performed just as well as those who didn't report any involvement in BDSM activities. In fact, they scored slightly better on questions that measure neuroticism, openness, adventurism, wellbeing, awareness and sensitivity to rejection than the comparison group.

Stiles cautioned, however, that the study's participants volunteered, which means they may not be representative of the general population.

FIFTY SHADES EFFECT

Rachel Venning, co-founder of the Babeland chain of adult stores in New York and Seattle, said this was the first time that she had heard that past research connected BDSM and mental illness.

"We have the section that's got the blindfolds, cuffs and floggers and people don't see it and go ‘that's psycho!'" Venning told Reuters Health.

In fact, Babeland stores saw a jump in sales of BDSM items mentioned in E.L. James's popular 2011 romance novel "Fifty Shades of Grey."

"Every person on every airplane and every beach chair was reading a copy of that book. That gave people a little more permission to explore that stuff without making them feel like a freak or weirdo," Venning said.

Stiles told Reuters Health that BDSM practitioners include doctors, nurses and lawyers.

Some diagnostic criteria manuals, in certain European countries, have removed references to BDSM, Krueger said. However, the new edition of the American Psychological Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-5) still considers sexual masochism a disorder if it causes people stress or dysfunction in their lives.

I had to laugh at "...probably don't have a mental disorder."
Phew.
Then I laughed even harder at "Stiles told Reuters Health that BDSM practitioners include doctors, nurses and lawyers."
Because we all know doctors, nurses and lawyers are exempt from mental disorders.

This is hard one to call as many lifestyles can cause stress or dysfunction. I collect vinyl records and have met collectors with "sub-frenzy" who clock up huge credit debts trying to keep up with all the new limited releases. They spend their rent and food money on the records which causes stress and dysfunction in their lives.

Another time, I was out with a bunch of mates strolling round our local park after a sunday pub lunch and we came across this bloke driving a radio controlled petrol car. I love this sort of stuff so we got chatting and he was showing us over his car, it had disc brakes on every wheel and a 4 speed manual gearbox. This is a good thing if you like this sort of thing! The thing is when he was showing us, he was also letting slip that he'd lost his gf over it due to the amount of cash it cost. The car itself cost somewhere around £2500 but the uprgrades were criminally expensive. I think he said the brakes cost £500. That's more than a real car!! The guy himself looked like he lived on a shoe string and his real car was on it's last legs so it looks like all his money went on his hobby. He's lost his relationship, not feeding himself properly, not got his financial priorities correct so does he fall into the mental health category too? He clearly loved his hobby btw, talked generously and with a passion for it.

As a final note on what is deemed dysfunctional or not, here's my two penneth;

If we are all to be like a text book person, then we'll all be the same. That means in this world we'd just keep getting more of the same, wanton pollution, wars, famines, gross disparity between poor and rich etc as all these things are instigated and supported by people who are 'normal'. Do you job, pay your taxes, don't ask any questions, as long as you're ok, don't worry about Johnny Foreigner starving/being bombed over there. Given that this is going on right now and that the majority are normal, does it not show that the criteria for being normal is not one worth taking too much note of.

Those brave Greenpeace campaigners in the 1970's were a pretty dysfunctional lot. So much so that they were persecuted by numerous governments from around the world....

Anything that causes disorder in someone's life is a disorder. The problem is ferreting out what is really causing the life problems. I'm mentally ill, and it's neither caused by, nor causes, imo, my interest in bdsm. It's caused by other problems, both early family life and probably genetics. I had hullicanations that I can remember at least as early as 3. OTOH, Dominance and whipping were part of my fantasies as soon as the hormones started suggesting I should, maybe, have some fantasies. I have always enjoyed pain. IMO, again, it's just the way I'm built. They are two independent things.

It seems the OP left out another interesting bit of information from this report.

First a primary link to an article about it. http://www.livescience.com/34832-bdsm-healthy-psych…. and the full and clear link to the journal information written by Andreas Wismeijer, a psychologist at Nyenrode Business University in the Journal of Sexual Medicine http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/jsm.1219….

To quote:

"Of the BDSM practitioners, 33 percent of the men reported being submissive, 48 percent dominant and 18 percent "switch," or willing to switch between submissive and dominant roles in bed. About 75 percent of the female BDSM respondents were submissive, 8 percent dominant and 16 percent switch."

There are a lot of people who don't believe that in general males tend to the dominant side and females tend to the submissive side of the spectrum. I personally believe that the percentage of males who are submissive is higher in BDSM than the total population. I also think there are more submissive males in the general population than will readily admit it whether they are that way through their nature or through acculturation.

It is still an interesting study even if it is limited geographically. A larger sample size and more geographical areas included would make the all the results in the study more authoritative. I hope they are conducted some day.

I personally believe there are more dominates in the male BDSM population than in the general population and both females and males in the BDSM practicing population are better adjusted and able to handle life’s challenges and have stronger codes and discipline than those who do not practice BDSM. They also sit above the salt at my table so I am glad the study factually puts BDSM practitioners in a positive light as I am sure you do also.

rant: You can't be a dominate. You can dominate another person but you cannot be a dominate person. /rant

That said, a person's interest in BDSM has nothing to do with that person's honor, adjustment or coping skills. Kinky people can be just as nutty as vanilla people. I think a lot of the negativity that many people associate with BDSM is because when a kinky person also happens to be a nut job, the opportunities to damage themselves and others is greatly compounded by their interest in BDSM and if they already lack the skills to cope with life's challenges, identifying as dominant or submissive isn't going to help.

If there has been one common theme I have been noticing lately, is that a lot of studies are showing BDSM really isn't a Mental Illness after all. Little by little, things are starting to change.

I'm a submissive bondage bottom. But it has nothing to do with my mental/emotional illnesses. I'm fourth generation mood disorder.
It also has nothing to do with my hypertension, and yes, that runs in the family also.

If you would rather spend your discretionary income on shoes instead of going on vacation or saving for a new car, so be it. If you live in your car because you spend your money on shoes instead of paying the rent that's a problem. It's really not that hard a line to draw.
