Way off topic.

I am moving October 1st. 2013

I am interested in finding a state does not hit the 100's during the summer.
I am also interested in a city that doesn't have an high incident of racism (my daughter is biracial and I want her to be able to make friends).
I do not want to pay more than 700 a month for rent.
But, would be willing to pay up to 850 to rent to own.
Not really a snow person but, can deal with cold weather better than hot.
This is the main reason that we are leaving TX.
Not interested in California and not interested in any areas that are gang infested or quote unquote bad areas.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Do you need a two bedroom? Massachusetts is nice but you wouldn't be able to get a 2BR in that price range in a decent neighborhood.

With those requirements and rental rate, I would say that Oregon would probably work.

Yeah, a nice coastal city like Newport or Florence might be cool, as far as the weather goes. Not sure about rental prices though.

There's about 3 states that meet your criterion.

$700 for rent? That's for a house to rent?

Colorado is a wonderful state but Pueblo is the only place here that cheap that I know of. I'd recommend Colorado Springs but I'm not sure if there aren't some racial overtones there. (Although I know quite a few blacks who seem happy living there.)

Will your income be independent of the place you live?

Look, I know you said it's the heat, but you may be able to deal with heat if it's not as humid as Fort Worth.

We both miss Colorado Springs. It has a nice climate and we did see bi racial couples around, but this was in the 90's when we lived there. The rents were in the 500 range but again this was the 90's then.

I only make a smidge over 2000 a month.
I could go up to 800 but I don't want to spend half my income on rent.
It seems to be cheaper to just buy a house, with monthly mortgage.

But, I am not ready to purchase a home until I find the right climate.
Thank you all for you input.

You know... when writing you can just type the... you know... actual quotes.

Like this: "bad areas".

Nah, tons of places on the Western slope in that range. Where we're at (Montrose) you can get a newer (2000s) 4 bedroom 1800 sqf house with a sizable backyard and a double garage in good neighborhood for +/-900 a month. You can get a two bedroom house or apartment downtown for at least as low as $500, maybe less, I haven't really checked.

Hell the mortgage on the 3000 sqf house we are currently paying on is only $800.

From Eugene to B.C. there is a broad valley that is generally flat and seldom above 200 feet. The actual city starts just North of Everett, ends just South of Olympia. Starts again 10 miles North of Portland, ends ten miles South of it. Then there is Salem and environs. Then there is Eugene / Springfield. Everything else is small town or rural. Nowhere I just mentioned has hot Summers. Nor is humidity a thing. At least, as regards XS heat. It does rain. Some say, it rains a lot. But most of the place stays green most of the year. And the temperature trend is looking pretty good, here.

My adopted sister and her husband live in Newport. They came from 35 years of Central Ca Coast sunshine, but soon adapted to the cooler north coast climate of Oregon. They say it's like Morro Bay, CA was 30 years ago (where I live and it's a pretty paradise, if pricey.)

If it were me- I would be interested in more ties then that you mentioned.

People can make an area. You also have to live where you can have work/income.

Lets say where I would not go- climate wise- too cold would be NH/VT/ME. ND/MT. The weather in the plains can get blustery. But states on the line like TN/NC- often get ice storm- and can lose power for days on end. So the actual snow- is better then the ice storm thing. However a place like Vermont is snows and is cold all the time- I often check out their weather to feel better about PA.

I would guess for you a small city of 50,000-250,000. Once you target a few read the local news papers. Pay attention to editorials, and letter to the editors.

And I will tell you some advice on buying a house- you can never know too much about a location. Keep up posted. Moving across country was a great decision for me. In my case tho I went to a state I had family in.

My sub and I just took a weekend trip to Rapid City, SD this past weekend. Small town, no pretentiousness, low cost of living. We'd love to live there. When we retire, we'll likely go there.
