So last night, drifting off to sleep with the wife snuggled up close, her phone lit off with a two-tone racket we had never heard before. California had issued a statewide Amber Alert, using a new system that broadcasts to smart phones.

Makes me think of the scene in Fahrenheit 451, where all Citizens are ordered outside to be on watch for the traitor Montague.

Interesting. Never gotten one of those, in the 2-ish years I've had a smart phone or before that. I used to be on a county text alert system (which you had to sign up for), but I unsubscribed after I started getting "emergency" alerts every other day about traffic jams and power outages.

I've been receiving these for almost 3 years now. I've received 1 Amber Alert, dozens of weather alerts (I'm on a coast, so flood watches get broadcast), and no Presidential alerts. Considering the major backlash that would occur, I'm pretty sure no President is ever going to send a gratuitous alert.

I dread this happening here in the UK. However, were it to happen, I feel pretty confident that somebody, somewhere, would cobble together a naughty app that would block such emergency alerts for my Android phone.

I no longer have cell phone service. and if they call my landline when I am sleeping- good luck- as I take the phone off the hook.

Why do you no longer have cell service? Collar me and inquiring minds want to know. Though it may be none of our business

I live on the east coast, but even when there were tornados and flooding nearby from Hurricane Sandy and my town was making announcements to stay indoors over the old emergency loudspeaker system they have rigged up, I don't recall getting a message on my phone. I wonder if it's a state thing?

And yeah, I can't see there being a Presidential alert that's not about a major terrorist attack or invasion. You're right that people would be pretty pissed.

It is not for "weather" alerts. The government does not care if you die in a tornado.

If you can root it you can simply replace your carrier provided OS with something a bit more secure. I have friends who are looking into an NSA-proof version of Android. But I'm pretty sure most android devices can be rooted if you are a geek or have geeky friends. That may be old info though.

Ho yes, mine's rooted and has a new OS on it. It's much, much more fun to play with now. I'm something of a geek on the side. ;-)

Heh... well... then there are tools. This is, however, one of those conversations that I will bow out of outside of an encrypted channel.

Our town hired some robo-dialer service to spam our land line. It originally showed the PD number, then the City Hall number, and now some "800 Service" number on the Caller ID.

For a while, it was calling five or six times a day to warn us about missing children, trash pickup, weather, or just being generally annoying. I finally had to use the "number block" feature from our phone provider.

We were getting "alerts" on the cellphones a few years ago, but they were all "special offers" from the cellular carrier. It took a while to get that stopped.

Anyone who gets your phone number seems to feel it's their privilege to hammer the hell out of it. I bought a pay-as-you-go cellular phone for times when I have to give a number to a shipper, selling something on Craigslist, etc. It's not a perfect solution, but it helps.
