LW- how did they recognize you? I mean..I live in MD..work pretty close to the area you live in and short of me overhearing a conversation with you saying something like "if you suck at vanilla relationships..." I would never know who you are???

Ok.. I do SOMETIMES have that running thought in my head where, if I am somewhere that is BDSM-related..I kind of look at people twice & think hmm.... I DID see one profile pic that looked an awful lot like the CEO of my company...

I would probably be creeped out (if like Sexy Red or LW) someone just approached me on the street or the grocery store unless it was someone from here who I feel I "know". I think I am pretty average...I have one of those "looks like somebody I know" vaguely familiar faces which is a good thing!!

This happened when I lived in PA and not MD. When I working for the county government where I lived in PA, it was a rather small city.

I've never been recognized here in MD yet but there's always that chance someone at my workplace could recognize me or someone at the grocery store might see me or remember me from the Crucible or somewhere else. Then again, I only have my current photo of one eye and hair up for the longest time now. I think it would be kinda difficult to recognize me now.

If I've been recognized from here, it hasn't been pointed out. I'm not sure I would care too much, though.

There's someone from here whom I email through our personal email. She has/had a picture up on CM. Then one day, Facebook shows her on my "People you may know" option. There she was - first name, last name, city, etc. I emailed her right away about it. So we Facebook friended.

Years ago when I was doing the Yahoo chat rooms - the user rooms - I was chatting with a guy. We talked more and more. Hey, we worked in the same city. Hey, we worked in the same field. Hey, we worked in the same industry. Hey, we worked at the same company. Hey, he was in my department. Sat just two rows down from me.

That was WEIRD.

Also chatted with another guy and learned he was my neighbor across the street when we were kids.

It's a small world out there!

There's a gal I have on Facebook, from a festival I went to in Oregon last year. I met some awesome people there and she was connected with them and Facebook friended me, after we "met" in some of the comment threads. I recognized her very distinct avatar from someone who posts on Fet. Also, many of the things she posts seem to come from a "slave perspective" (whatever that means, but she seems subservient to her husband). I'm pretty sure they are one and the same, but I have not and won't ask her "Hey are you on Fet?" I've thought about it, but I wouldn't want to make things awkward for her.

I've never really been too concerned about being recognized. Especially since I'm not the most social duck on the planet.

Imagine my surprise then when someone I had messaged asked "you go to (my church), don't you?"

Other than that, the closest I've had to a 'don't I know you' was running into a guy on here who was from the same itty bitty tiny town that I used to live in. Apparently kinky people are everywhere.

Also, one time I went to my local coffee shop, the one right around the corner, and apparently the local kinky coffee event was on (I don't really participate in the local group offline) and I picked out multiple people I recognized from Fet, and then went back to doing shit on my laptop because that was why I'd came to the coffee shop in the first place. The staff assured me the unusually large group of people was "harmless". Heh heh. I guess they were worried their regular might be scared off by the alt and kinky folk.

Yeah, all the time. People often introduce themself by their 'scene name' so you know whether or not you know them straight away.

In some munches, they have sticky labels, and most people put their scene name on that, which makes it even easier.

It's always pretty cool to meet people from online, they're often not what you would expect, being just ordinary, down to earth, not especially glamorous people. When you see them online the next day you read them differently, because you've met them.

Years ago, from msn chat, we all had a big room meet up and that was really cool, I felt really in the gang afterwards :-)

Aside from people writing me from other sites, I had a super creepy thing happen twice.

One, a guy at a job I was at kept staring at me all the time and then just became a work friend (he was married). We never talked about kink or sex. A few months later, I get an email from someone on another kink site and its him. He went into all this detail of what he was really thinking about at our vanilla work buddy lunches. Ewwww.

THis one is even worse. Someone wrote me from another kink site and said he KNEW me and proceeded to mention certain things I wore and even my laundry. I got so pissed I reported him for stalking on the site and he confessed who he was.

He was the son of an old lady who lived in my building and for years he would visit her and see me in the elevator or doing my laundry and he just watched me and said hello once. I was super upset and he had the nerve to say that now that his mother died could we date.
He was so creepy.

This has been my experience as well.

Oh god yes!

I've bumped into the odd person on the street from fetish clubs and what-not when I was a lot younger and more into the clubbing scene. I kinda expected it.

The most fascinating one was when a Domme who had topped me at a club turned up at a sales meeting about a year later. It was interesting to see her trying out the "Domme-fu" in negotiations, only to be rebuffed quite soundly by my then boss. Not sure how I'd have coped on my own

I would have told him to fuck himself and then left the party. That's just plain old rude, creepy and intrusive.

The other day, one of my subs texted me to tell me she had just served a latter to my primary...and they had never met before.

Awkward.

in our local group confidentiality is the first thing that is mentioed... alot of people have their faces on different perv sites but that does not mean they are perving all the time... unless i was at a bdsm party i dont know anyone .... unless they are already friends of mine and there is a reason to say hi to them...

I came across a profile on CM of a friend of mine. Since I don't have a photo of myself posted, he wouldn't have a clue I'm on here. He's a really nice guy, but I now feel like I know way more about his sex life than I ever wanted to know.....

I wonder this because so many times we all say "get out in the community"...

For those without photos posted (of your current self that are recognizable ) have you ever seen someone at an event that you recognize from CM or another such website? Do you acknowledge that you know who they are? Make a point of introducing yourself

For those with photos... I always wonder if someone I meet at events is someone I "know" from here. Everyone has reasons for not posting pics and those don't matter (it is not my place to decide whether their reasons are good, bad, valid...) but it does give the "anonymous" more power in deciding whether they want to someone to know who they are...

I actually know where you live.

I have run into people on CM that I know from the local community. I have never had it go the other way though.

I did come home one night and find a submissive I knew from munches playing D & D with my nephew. That was a bit of a shock for both of us.

So there's a kicker to this. The Mouse and I head up to BESS (The local BDSM group) one day to meet TMIK and of course, like most meets, they have a demo discussion going on (Pain w/o marks-I was all in), a good one too.
Like most of these sorts of things, it was a person talking and a bottom/sub/slave/borrowed object/whatever doing the demoing.
And the whole time she's doing her twitching and moaning as various ungeunts and electricity etc...are used on her, Mouse and I are staring at her like, "That chick is familiar."
She's waited on us at some coffee shop in the city.No idea which one,or who she is, but yeah, we knew her but there it is.
Recognition.

Funny stuff

I've never been to an event, but if someone asked me for a picture (nicely), or wanted to know more about me, I'd be fine with it. I'm at the comfortable with myself part of life - not static, still changing and trying new things, but genuinely ok with who I am, and equally ok with changing the parts I want to.

Besides, part of the disinterest in events for me is that I fade in crowds (except for the very rare moment when I want to lead them). One on one, though, works better for me.

I haven't run into anyone from a kink site (that I know of), but we do see people from kink groups out in "public" from time to time. We say hello, talk a bit, no big deal. I've never had anyone ask questions about how we met or anything like that, so it's just a matter of running into a friend.
If anyone asked... well, if they are close enough to ask, they just might be close enough to hear the answer. Whether they want to or not.
