Interesting. I'm wondering a little about the age gap between the two men who were arrested in connection with this thing. For some reason, I got the impression that the older one had the younger one along to teach him about mummification. If there is actually a trial, how much do folks want to bet that the term "I read it on the internet" becomes a part of the transcript?

This is a sad instance of play gone wrong. Obviously no safety protocols were being used. The article really does not give much information. For 2 people not to realize he was in danger or having problems means they were otherwise occupied and not paying attention.

I am curious as to cause of death. There are other dangers versus just mouth suffocation. Chest compression can be an issue with inexperienced people wrapping to tight either around the chest or neck areas.

Has this turned up in any other papers or news sources? As no names are named, it could just be the Mail making shit up again.

I was also taught to watch for signs of body heat not escaping and body heat becoming too high in addition to the possibilities mentioned.

There's not enough information in he article. Occam's Razor suggests that the guy's mouth was taped over as well - or his breathing was restricted in some other way. (A ball gag and a stuffy nose?)

I could imagine that being just about the most common mistake in body-restriction type activities. A gag is fine till one can't breathe through the nose for some reason.

Yet another reason why the ring-gags are better than ball-gags!

There are many risks associated with clingfilm/mummification bondage. These are the main ones. The key is to know your sub and know when he/she is in trouble.

Suffocation:
You would think this is obvious. As a reference the average person can hold their breath from 45 to 60 seconds. A good swimmer up to 2 minutes. This means something as small as a short bathroom break while you sub is bound and gagged is enough time for the sub to run out of air and quit breathing.

Heat Exhaustion:
The body can no longer use evaporation as a cooling method. Internal body temperature will rise. Profuse sweating occurs. Muscle weakness, mental confusion can be signs of heat exhaustion.

Dehydration:
Cramping, Headache, dark urine, lack of sweat are all signs the body is already dehydrated to a point a point that is dangerous.

Hypothermia:
Sweat is trapped against the body and the body remains wet. This pulls heat away from the body rapidly in a cool environment. A person laying on a tiled or concrete floor in a cool environment can experience hypothermia in as little as 30 minutes. A cool 55F/13C temperature basement in the winter cool more than enough to give a wrapped sub problems.

Blood Circulation:
Tightly wrapped joints can cut off circulation to body extremities. This often happens with clingfilm as the wrap tends to bunch up at the joints do to body motion from struggling or squirming. Ten minutes of pins and needles feeling might be okay. Four to five hours and you have done bodily harm.

Chest Compression:
Multi-layer tight wrapping can compress the chest enough that is hard to breathe. The bad part is when the person is exhausted he/she usually does not have enough strength to inhale. With no air in the lung he/she can make little to no noise. Silent death with little to no struggle can occur.
