The vast majority of men I've met from various sites lied about at least one thing, usually their height, including the guy who was 6'3" and claimed to be 6'4".

When I turned 40, I kept myself at 39 for a while until I realized that while I received more mail as a 39 yo, it was not quality mail.

Below are the highlights from OKCupid's study:

The Big Lies People Tell In Online Dating

"I'm 6 feet tall."

REALITY: People are two inches shorter in real life.

"I make $100,000 a year."

REALITY: People are 20% poorer than they say they are.

"Here's a recent pic."

REALITY: The more attractive the picture, the more likely it is to be out-of-date.

"I'm bisexual."

REALITY: 80% of self-identified bisexuals are only interested in one gender.

That's just dumb. 6'4" is a downgrade from 6'3". You're supposed to start lying the other way once you pass 6'3".

I can't count the number of times I've met a man and been struck by the fact that his eyes are much closer to mine than they're supposed to be. Maybe men have different measuring tapes? Like I said, it's funny. There has been one exception to the rule and that's the man I met who was 6'4". He is the only one who hasn't lied about his height. I think the number of men that I've met over the last 6 years of dating has been 32. That's a lot of men lying about height, and many of them lied about age too - about 2/3rds.

As I've said, they don't even need to lie to me about the height thing! I like short men. It's weird.

Offline, I actually get the same attention that I always have and that's because in the world of flesh and blood, you don't go around with an age stapled to your forehead; you go around with who and what you are. People in the world of digital profiles make too much of a number before even glancing one pixel at the person, I think, and this phenomenon swings, unfortunately, in all directions.

Yeah, I'm also 6'4" and I never lie about my height. The thing is that I want to lie and say I'm 6'3", but there are so many men who are 6'1" saying they are 6'3" that I'd look like an idiot, so I just stick with the truth.

I think I am 5'11'' but I always measure 6'00''.

REALITY: Most people are 20% poorer. There are some niches out there which were recession and depression proof.

I'm on track to make over 100k this year, without too much effort.

Next year everything will be in place to make at least 500k, if not more.

But then again, hmmmm.. I dont have a job.

So in your world women having a personal preference is deemed a standoffish attitude to all men outside of the preference? Is personal preference a luxury afforded only to men? Maybe you should write the next best seller.

Seems everyone gets lied to from people claiming to be younger than they are. Anyone had it the other way around?

I met this guy who was intelligent and we really connected. He claimed he was 2 years younger than me and I didn't care. I have had good connections with men from 10 years younger to 30 or so years older, so his age didn't matter. After we got really close he came clean (supposedly) and he adjusted it to 5 years younger, and just before we decided to meet up, he admitted he was actually 10 years younger.

I must admit I didn't feel flattered at all, but rather ridiculed.
I wish I could say it was the only lie he told in that time, but everything from his looks to his family history was a lie. (And his real life looks was fine, he just didn't like himself!)

And my profile was a couple of years out of date as I haven't been in here for ages, but it's correct now!

Hmmm. Not all turning gay, but perhaps the bathroom togetherness paradigm would explain why the vast majority of women's profiles on the other side claim they are bisexual

! Your post reminded me of the guy in his thirties on the other side who pursued me for a time. I (politely, not standoffishly) declined to meet him because of our age gap. He messaged me a month later with the same profile having aged 8 years! Since I didn't believe the handsome young man in the photo was really him anyway, the remarkably accelerated aging didn't sway my resolve

It has nothing to do with my world. The OP's question had to do with the world and the trends that may be cropping up in regard to the subject raised in the OP. Preference is one thing. We all have them. To what insular lengths we go in gardening a rigid friends list or shutting out a potentially rewarding relationship with someone who falls a day beyond our cut-off lines is quite another.

Ugh. Really? That is common wisdom? In my experience older is not necessarily better, and is certainly not wiser by default.
I see a lot of men and women lying about their age, usually downward. I don't think wisdom is the reason. I think it is more about perception.
Younger does tend to equate to vitality, even if it is not true.

Tell me about it.

Chalk me up as one of the take-me-as-I-am-ers. I guess it's a bit easier being a bit younger, and I'm proportionate from a height and weight standpoint. But, I don't fucking fit comfortably on public transport, airplanes, (Nope, I don't have the money for first class...) or in the back seat of the vast majority cars. I'm mostly leg, too, so that doesn't help things...

I do, however, come in real handy for little old ladies in the supermarket.

As a related question: Why do you suppose people get pissy when you call them on their painfully obvious lies? I.e., "Wow, you sure don't look 38." "So how many pounds ago were all the photos I've seen of you taken?" (No, I don't actually put it that way. I do have manners.) I suppose it's ridiculous to expect people who lack integrity to own up to their actions.

Why lie? That's silly. I'm 55 going on 56 in December and I'm 6'1" & haven't started "shrinking" yet. The only thing I don't say at all is my weight and that's slowly going down. It will be going down even faster come next month after my gastric-bypass. If people want to judge me on my size, and many people do do that to other people, they can clearly see my size in my pictures.
