Why steal from our parents/grandparents when we can steal from our children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren (and, likely, each generation after)? We won't lose their votes in the next election, after all.

Heh, I totally get what you're saying but I do class the two differently. One is actual theft. Money was paid in for a purpose then stolen. The other is "saddling with debt". They are both hideous but I find the straight up theft to be worse.

Regarding the deficit spending I haven't been paying attention because I no longer believe it matters. The Fed and Wall Street have much more influence on the economy than the US Govt. does. While I hate deficit spending in general at this point I feel like it's worrying about a sunburn as the nuke falls on your head.

One can be seen as "theft" while the other can be seen as "pre-theft." I understand your idea that taking from our current seniors is stealing money that has been paid in. But, at least they can have their say in the matter (to a degree). Our kids and further generations (generally) do not have that opportunity. In a way, that's the worse theft.

Thankfully, I have not decided to hold my breath until we get fiscally sound politicians in power.

Two possibilities which worry me are that, A), the Syrians might hit Israel, provoking them into a nuclear counterstrike, or B) Syria might release chemical weapons to terrorists - in each case whether we strike at them, or whether we refrain from doing so. There is no way to call that one. I get the impression that Obama is thinking we need to stomp this fire out fast before something breaks loose. Whether we can or not is problematical, and experience says likely not. This is a no-win situation for the USofA and Obama, and we all just have to hope for the best.

FR,

Obama mentioned something (not today) about a "shot across the bow" to get Assad's attention.

What would constitute a "shot across the bow" in this case? I understand where the phrase comes from and what it symbolizes. But, how would that be accomplished in Syria?

What can we destroy without changing their civil war? Are we just going to buzz their towers and drop bombs full of flowers, lollipops and cotton candy? If we take out Assad's forces, it's going to materially change the civil war. Are we ready and willing to deal with that?

We might dump a howitzer or two for the rebels to take out of the cosmoline and fire away with. That would make a little splash.

But, that could materially change the war very easily. That's not why Obama is thinking of military action, is it? Isn't it just to send a clear signal that use of chemical weapons is a no no? If you want to say that since Assad's regime used the chemical weapons (which I still am not convinced it did), he needs to be taken down, then, we should do that (no, ThompsonX, I do not support the idea of the US removing Assad from power). Don't just send a shot across his bow.

Maybe send him a letter with powder in it in a diplomatic pouch.

Hey, if it goes anywhere other than sanctions which wont amount to much, and 'strongly worded' condemnations....

Then I think supplying the hardware to the rebels and maybe a bomb or two from some temp base in Jordan to level out some govt hardware there, ala Libya is what will be done.

What seems to be the problem here? Syria attacked Syria!
Now President Pantload wants to become "Al qeada's AirForce?"
The next president needs to declare the U.S. as a *Neutral Country!*
I guess it would be better had Assad or "The Rebels" (al qeada) run those people over with a tank then. Who cares, dead id dead! And in Syria that's a good thing!
I wish someone had smothered Bin Laden with a pillow in his crib when he was a baby!
So I guess you can't use gas to kill them but you could use say,...drawing and quartering or,...keelhauling? I'd rather be gassed then those two things.
The *hired help* in "Washington need to end all that "U.S. as world leader" Bullshit. We can't afford it and that's not part of the job description. I don't want to "lead" anyone!
I can imagine all the defense contractors walking around in a trance for the last week with visions of sugarplumbs and billion dollar contracts dancing in their heads.

I could not possibly agree more with all of these statements.

OK, but for anyone who thinks beyond might makes right that's not exactly an improvement. The closest we have is the UN for sanctioning interventions like this. It's corrupt as hell but it's something. In the end though it hardly matters. THe US is virtually forced to go to war against someone pretty soon here. You can't spend the kind of money we do on military and not use it. People might start asking some questions.

Good points Jeff......... Military, NSA, MI5, MI6, CIA etc........all need to justify big budgets.

No brains, it didnt escape me, yet the thread topic seems to have passed you by.

defiantbadgirl -> RE: Obama Willing to Pursue Solo Syria Strikes (9/1/2013 9:56:09 AM)

We (the US) need to stay out of it. How can the US even think of policing the world when many Americans can't even afford a basic human right like health care? If this was an issue of biological weapons I would feel differently because an illness could spread and end up here. Since the weapons used were chemical, not biological we should stay out of it. We should do what other governments that actually give a shit about their citizens do, spend the money on our own people.
