That train of thought got tested on Labor Day when I saw for myself the aftermath of an accident just 5 minutes after it happened. 2 bicyclists on Hwy 1 were hit from behind at full speed by a drunk driver. One died at the scene, and the body was lying in the middle of the highway. The other had been flung along with his bicycle over the guard rail into the bushes. He's hospitalized in critical condition. The dumbass driver, age 29, who was driving effed up at 11:30 in the morning, was unhurt of course and arrested for DUI, vehicular manslaughter, and reckless driving. Her life will NEVER be the same, as will the poor man critically injured. As for the dead man...I'm sure the last thing on his mind was 'WTF, I'm was just out for a holiday ride with my buddy, and now I'm DEAD?!' I don't personally know any of the people involved. But my town in so small, all involved were locals, and I'm bound to know someone who knew at least one of them. That fact, and that I often ride my bike on Hwy 1 in the area where it happened so it could have been me, brought it all home in the very worst way.
