can you be genuinely sad for people you only know because you see them on television after this or that disaster has befallen them?

my answer is "no, not really."

Yes. Absolutely I can feel this way, it's not a given or a constant.

For me, it is related to compassion and empathy... and being a part of the human family.

Of course. Would I be more upset if they were people I knew? Also, of course.

Yes, I can be. Yes, I usually am, although sometimes I'm not.

When I was little things like that used to upset me a lot. Then somewhere along the line I turned it off. Now I often don't feel much. Don't know if that's good or bad.

I usually am. I hate seeing people upset, whether known or not.
It's one of the things I would never want to change about myself if given a choice.

The majority of the time, no. I feel indifferent. There are a couple of people though who I only know online but we have chatted before who I find to have something similar that I can talk to them about. Those people I will feel some emotions towards.

I'm usually called cold and "ice princess" because I'm that way.

what she said...just recently I had to fight back tears big time, when on the other side of the motorway about 15 ambulances were busy after a massive accident there...

Yes, I definitely feel a lot of empathy, even to those I don't know. I find myself projecting myself in to their position.

Yes, but it's a different kind of sadness than if it happens to me or someone I know. Most of the time, the dip in mood isn't as strong and doesn't last as long - a passing, distant "that's awful, I wish that didn't happen."

That train of thought got tested on Labor Day when I saw for myself the aftermath of an accident just 5 minutes after it happened. 2 bicyclists on Hwy 1 were hit from behind at full speed by a drunk driver. One died at the scene, and the body was lying in the middle of the highway. The other had been flung along with his bicycle over the guard rail into the bushes. He's hospitalized in critical condition. The dumbass driver, age 29, who was driving effed up at 11:30 in the morning, was unhurt of course and arrested for DUI, vehicular manslaughter, and reckless driving. Her life will NEVER be the same, as will the poor man critically injured. As for the dead man...I'm sure the last thing on his mind was 'WTF, I'm was just out for a holiday ride with my buddy, and now I'm DEAD?!'

I don't personally know any of the people involved. But my town in so small, all involved were locals, and I'm bound to know someone who knew at least one of them. That fact, and that I often ride my bike on Hwy 1 in the area where it happened so it could have been me, brought it all home in the very worst way.

for thishereboi:

I am sad to tears when I hear of a bashing or a family disowning someone MARVELOUS who simply happened to be born NOT BORING (and you know what I mean), and sometimes, tears of rage occur.

because the same thing can happen to ANYBODY, queer or het or inbetween.

Bashed and disowned doe marrying a "Papist".

bashed and disowned for loving someone of African descent.

bashed and disowned for being African Goy or Shiksa and loving a Daughter of Solomon, so to speak, and let's not begin to talk about how we can feel bad for Boi's we don't know who are born that way but born on a KIBBUTZ, and how... well, you know.
