My bad, I was basing it on fucktoy's post stating that. Now maybe she will come back and explain which country she is ranting on about.

Not sure what the rest of your rant is about. Perhaps you are replying to another poster and got confused as I have never implied that I don't care about the rights of the child or think this is anything but tragic as far as he is concerned. I have also never implied that I don't think we should have weapon restrictions.

I would be curious to know more about this guy and any criminal history. Many times we find reasons that these types should have been in jail instead of out shooting people.

What kind of restrictions on my almighty gun rights could have prevented this idiot from shooting the kid ? Certainly not that stupid Colorado law.

No, its not all you are saying. You suggested my post was in and of itself racist.

Assuming that a white guy can't shoot a black kid for any reason than race is racist, yes. I'm still waiting to hear you say either that that's not what you meant or that you understand there isn't enough evidence yet to make such a claim. That so far all the evidence suggests is that racism might have been the cause. I'm waiting for you to say that you know it's irresponsible to go bandying about that kind of accusation when you can't back it up with anything more substantial than... well I think he's guilty.

As long as you fail to acknowledge this, I'm afraid that, yes. I think your post is racist and irresponsible to boot.

I thought you were better than this, obviously not. I said what I said and stand by it, its my opinion, its a strong one and I am entitled to post it.

My post is less irresponsible than some guy blowing an 8yr olds face off. You also offer no feasible explaination as to why he hung around the appartments until he found his victim.

Maybe the kid's mom or dad pissed the guy off?

Maybe he didn't like the kid's shirt?

Maybe the kid did something to his car at some point previous?

There's 3.

I wonder if the rest of the kids the victim was playing with were white, or not. That would better support your racism argument, though I won't be surprised if race had something to do with it.

No, there really is only one alternative. If he's not bat shit crazy then he's racist (or perhaps both). There is no other plausible explanation for what happened. That said, I'm willing to wait and see what the investigators come up with before I judge the situation. I'm confident that they will be able to find the evidence needed to prove one or the other. And if that evidence proves he is a racist (and it may well do), I'll be more than happy to condemn him for it. I just don't think the few facts we currently have are enough to support that conclusion.

In answer to Peon's argument: I understand that racism is often so subtle that it's impossible to "prove". In fact, that's what makes it particularly insidious, and that's very unfortunate. Still, I'm not willing to jump the gun with accusations of racism unless there is compelling evidence to think that that was the reason, and no other. And if that means I wind up extending certain people more grace than they deserve, then that is the sad but necessary consequence of being unwilling to jump to conclusions.

But before you argue that all that is simply because this stuff doesn't affect me, I'll have you know... I'm a cook, which means I work in an industry where I'm a minority two times over: once as a woman and twice as a caucasian. I can't tell you how many times I've had occasion to wonder if I was being discriminated against. I have never accused anyone based on speculation or circumstantial evidence, because I feel that it is irresponsible to make that strong of an accusation without proof. That has often placed me at a disadvantage because, as you correctly said, "proof", is hard to come by. I'm willing to accept that. Which is why I think it's fair that I hold others to the same standard.

Certainly you are entitled to post your opinions and, as irresponsible as they may or may not be, they are very certainly much less irresponsible than blowing some 8 year old's face off.

I'm sorry if you took offense to my opinions. They were intended as an argument, not a reflection on you personally. I have always held you in high regard, and will continue to do so.

Well, I hate to rain on everyone's parade, but I wasn't apologising so much as expressing regret that someone took offense to what I said. It was not intended to offend, and I'm sorry that it did. However, it was a perfectly valid opinion and I'm not sorry for having expressed it, nor for having expressed it strongly. I reserve the right to do so, unapologetically, just as I recognise other people's right to express their own opinions to me. In fact, I hope they do. I try not to take disagreements personally, and I think others would be wise to do the same.

Have a good night, y'all.

At no point in time did I state that this guy wasn't a racist (even stating I wouldn't be surprised if race had something to do with it). I, too, am not willing to jump to conclusions, preferring to wait for the answers. I'm not defending this guy against anything other than knee jerk accusations. I do believe the truth will bear out and we'll easily be able to chastise, condemn and punish this guy according to whatever laws he broke and prejudices he exercised.

One problem with the racist theory. Was this the first black person to show up?
If not he was waiting not for a race but for a person. No that this in any way lessens the evil of what he did.

Forgive me, but, if you clearly stated that, in your opinion, there are only two alternatives (ie racist and/or crazy) how are you not already judging the situation?

It's doubly subtle, and doubly insidious, if we remember that racism doesn't actually have to be about what we usually identify as 'hate'. No seething fury need be involved. Remember Hannah Arendt and her 'banality of evil'? Eichmann's murdering was really just his 'doing his job'?

I'm not going to go all Godwin's Law on you. All I'm saying is that racism *can* be just about not caring. The sort of racist I have in mind - and maybe this shooter - is some bloke who doesn't see a person, he sees just a target - some blob that needs to be done away with.

Nosathro -> RE: "yeah , I shot that kid" 8 year old in medically induced coma (9/13/2013 2:09:59 PM)

Well Texas is a very open pro gun State, Brian Cloninger does not appear to have any prior criminal history, he comment “Yes I shot that kid” would bring into question if his motive was racist. Barring any other motive, none so far, racism seems to be at the top of the list for reasons.
