Oh lol what a coup Vladimir Putin did in NY-times with the article on Syria.
I cannot help admiring him for the smart move, despite the fact that I am a strong supporter of the idea of a direct intervention in Syria to put an end to the massacre there.

I think Putin is playing mind games. It is a little payback for Americas intervention in Afghanistan under Reagan.

I have to agree, in part, with Polite on this one. Putin is playing a game. Sadly, he's on the right side of it. Obama is on the wrong side.

Putin is shielding the Assad regime. They are also upholding International law to do it. While the use of Chemical Weapons is also against International Law, the UN has to be the one that metes out the sentence for that crime.

Putin is making a mockery of Obama.

It's odd that none of the players, all of whom claim to be upholding one or other version of international law, has yet proposed the proper route for dealing with all the war crimes committed by all the various players in Syria - and there has been lots, committed by all sides.

Is it too much to hope that someone will remember that an investigation by the UN can be established into war crimes in Syria? That this investigation gets underway sooner rather than later, and that its findings be referred directly to the ICJ in The Hague? That this investigation remain ongoing after the war is over so that all the perpetrators will answer to justice at some point, regardless of whether they are winners or losers? This is the appropriate legal way of dealing with war crimes, in accordance international law.

Knowing that whatever the outcome of the civil war in Syria, the players will have to account for their actions to the ICJ just might succeed in getting them to moderate their behaviour in future. It will give some limited reassurance to all of us who have been horrified by the chemical weapons attack, and the countless other barbarities in Syria. It will give some tiny glimmer of justice to the tens of thousands who have died while the great powers decided to use Syria as the place to act out their power games.

Above all it will make international law relevant, and not the private plaything of the great powers of the world.

Tweakable.... The difficulty with Syria is the war crimes can only be prosecuted after the the war ends, or a truce is signed. Two things I cant see happening any time soon. After the war in Bosnia, charges were brought against some of those involved. The knowledge this took place wont stop the bloodlust in Syria. I read a post somewhere that said if Russian troops ever got west of NYC, you could count on the US using chemical weapons. I think that stands true, not just for America but for everyone. There needs to be more of a push to take existing chemical weapons out of circultaion, as well as reduce nuclear stockpiles.

ALL the major powers need to look closely at what weapons, or components thereof, they are giving to their allies. Until all of this is done, the issue is still likely to crop up.

It is dangerous to think that Putin is doing it for payback for afghanistan. While putin vastly enjoys sticking it to the americans, it is a mistake to think he is doing it for any reason other than advancing's russias national goals.

And he is lapping obama at this point.

The united states has always maintained the right to act unilaterally. And the idea that war is 'illegal' unless sanctioned by the UN.. is well words don't describe.

The current case in syria is a good case in point. Chemical weapons are 'illegal'. But nothing happens unless the people that have the means to do so are interested in advancing a cause. Its a fig leaf, a pretense, a waste of breath - same as it ever was.

I just glanced at the paper this morning and saw a story, that read something like, we have a President that is decisive and well informed about the Syrian situation. Unfortunately, it is Putin.

Aibo, I'd like to see India and oh,...Brazil team up to intervene in Syria if anyone. They both have decent Navies and India with a billion people would simply over run them. Plus, they have nukes.
Or, simply let China handle it.
Honorable mention, N. Korea.
But, I don't think any kind of intervention is going to help, more likely just stir up a hornet's nest with Assad and all the rebel groups probably teaming up against the... "infadels."

It's not surprising Putin is informed about Syria. Hasn't been been propping up Assad for a while now?

It's kind of fun to watch some of our right-leaning posters lionize a former Communist and KGB officer who's not shy about quelling dissent among his citizenry while propping up a brutal dictator.

But hey, if he gives you a chance to diss Obama . . .

Lionize? I show that Time Magazine will make him the front page story everywhere, but the US. The US gets a story about it being time to pay college athletes?!?

I'm ashamed that Putin ran political circles around Obama. I'm no fan of Putin. I'm much happier that Obama is my President, as opposed to Putin being my President.

Putin and Obama go horseback riding.
Too funny, the lefties have been saying for years now that "the world" hates the U.S. and now that people agree with them they're all miscombobulated and don't know what to say! lol
