In my readings I have found that the best way to begin would be to find a social event. I looked under the events section but it doesn't seem to be many in the northeast. Does anybody know of any particular groups/events that the northeast holds?

The easiest way is Fetlife. Put your town or region into the search box and then click on the groups or events tab.

Yeah, Fetlife is great for hooking up with local folks. If there isn't a group for your particular area, it's easy to create one.
