TheHeretic -> Re: An update on posting style (9/23/2013 6:04:22 PM)

Mod Chi has posted the following on a thread where it is not possible to reply, hence a new thread for the subject

quote:

Those of you who persist in making other posters the topic despite a plethora of advisories to not do so, both on threads and via gold mail, are severely trying my patience. You have been warned.

Hint - use of "you" and "your" starts to turn the topic to other posters.

Sorry if we are burning you out, Chi, but banning personal pronouns isn't going to fix anything. The posters in this forum frequently speak directly to each other. The problem is not with the style or verbiage of that. If someone posts blatant lies, then saying, "you are a fucking liar," is the appropriate response.

Locking threads when one or two posters decide they need to destroy the discussion only encourages more of the same behavior.

And while we are on the subject, locking threads because they don't fit the desired political template of the moderator's views is an abuse of the power entrusted to the moderator of political forum.

You're preaching to the choir.

It doesn't matter if it's the truth (see one of my sig lines) It only matters if someone gets all butthurt.

Re:

Per:

If there is a succession of violating posts by multiple users, the thread will be locked and THEN the TOS violating posts will be removed in an effort to help those posting in that manner to be immediately aware of the problem. The thread will NOT be unlocked however, after the offending posts are removed.

We are locking the threads until they can be cleaned. There are so many reports that they can't all be cleaned and unlocked immediately, especially during times that we have less coverage.

Re:

This isn't happening. See above.

To expand on what HillWilliam said regarding the truth not being a defense to personal attacks - if I were in fact a junkie lying thief, you still could not call me that, despite it being the truth, because it is a personal attack. Therefore, you cannot call other posters liars.

See also:

There appears to be a misconception among numerous posters in this forum. That misconception is that they or others are running for office, as virtually all discussions end up with discussions regarding, and/or attacks against, each other's character.

Stop, please.

Sometimes, it lQQks like it.

I mean, way back when, Sanity was a master at getting threads locked that were going against him but by pulling his passive aggressive BS, but now it seems a hodgepodge.

I've seen threads locked that I really didn't think were going badly at all.

VideoAdminChi -> RE: Re: An update on posting style (9/23/2013 6:24:21 PM)

We don't know until we review the posts that were ticketed. If we get multiple reports from multiple users, or if we are in a low coverage period, we lock them. When threads get out of control it takes hours to pull, write letters, and document the violations.

Please remember something I said a long time ago to Gamma and others.

Just because you get a report doesn't mean there's a violation.

Some people are just whiny little bitches.

2 non mod people are posting here and we're usually on the opposite side of any thread but we both see the same thing happening.

VideoAdminChi -> RE: Re: An update on posting style (9/23/2013 6:41:54 PM)

Many tickets are disallowed, but we still have to check them out, and the context in which they appear.

We also spend quite a bit of time working with reporters of non-violations, explaining what is and is not a violation. We retain the option to moderate for abuse of the ticket system.

That's a lie. And the practice is getting more common, and ever more blatant.

Claiming that a thread about an ideological wing in the forum is the same as singling out an individual?

Deleting a thread and prohibiting the subject from P&R, when those who turn every tragedy involving a firearm into a smear of all gun owner have a mass murderer who used a bus shoved back at them?

Shark jump. Ain't buying it.

OrionTheWolf -> RE: Re: An update on posting style (9/23/2013 8:11:20 PM)

~FR~

I will repost my opinion that I have placed on other topics concerning moderation. People know what they are doing, so make them accountable. Moderate the bitches that are causing the problem, do it viciously, and allow those that are willing to discuss things without all the personal attacks do so. Flaming posters is contagious, as is seen in not just Collarchat but in an email group or discussion group that does not slam down on it hard and fast.

If a few people flounce because they are being trouble makers, no problem, as it will eventually improve things for everyone else.

BamaD -> RE: Re: An update on posting style (9/23/2013 8:29:50 PM)

Fr

There is at least one poster who comes on to threads proclaiming his contempt for everyone who does not agree with him and adding virtually nothing but insults to the conversation.
It seems as if he is attempting to get any conversation he can't win by intimidation locked.
My problem is that reporting him gives him just what he seems to desire, a locked thread.
What do you suggest other than another un-moderated thread so if nothing else he can be put in his place?

Claiming that that threads are being yanked due to my political views would be incorrect because you don't know what my views are.

It's as Chi stated. We're volunteers who fit this in during our free time. When there's a thread that has 16 pages worth of arguments and multiple tickets, it takes hours to go through. So, the thread gets locked until we have the time to do the clean up.

Orion, I see your point of view, but the reality is that there is no way to moderate where everyone is happy. We will always be accused of being to harsh or too soft regardless of what we do.

NoBimbosAllowed -> RE: Re: An update on posting style (9/23/2013 8:48:58 PM)

"We're volunteers who fit this in during our free time. When there's a thread that has 16 pages worth of arguments and multiple tickets, it takes hours to go through"

very interesting and salient point. and without intention of challenging Heretic and William, it begs the question of the Chi: did either of them offer to be mods and put in the same amount of time, taken from their free time, as Chi does?

and if so (but dependent on offering to spend the same amount of time as a mod, not treating it as a lark or walk-in-the-park, because as an ex-mod of equally feisty folk, I know that ain't so), did Chi turn down their offer to be mods?

Might I suggest that certain posters who do nothing but post personal attacks and then report any responses be banned. Most of us are grown ups and do not report posts even when disagreements get heated. However it is clear that certain posters are using the mods to lock/delete threads they are losing.

Nope. And you aren't the one sending me gold-bordered bullshit either, Rho, but what vanishes and how speaks an entirely different truth about the one who is.

It's a tough, thankless, payless job. I get that. It's still a job though, and if it can't be done in an ethical way by the individual doing the most of it in a particular arena, then that needs to be pointed out.

DomKen -> RE: Re: An update on posting style (9/23/2013 9:05:05 PM)

I do not see any evidence of preference in the moderation recently. I see evidence of manipulation of the system but not bias by the mods.

cloudboy -> RE: Re: An update on posting style (9/23/2013 9:07:47 PM)

I still find it funny that participants in the P&R forum spend time reporting other posters. I never understood (until the Zimmerman threads kept getting locked) that the bulk of your moderating duties stem from the pleas of "aggrieved" CMMB posters.

Good luck sorting it all out.

As for me, I can't really follow what exactly the heretic is saying.....

I read the above rant several times, and I still can't make sense of it.

I have never reported anyone and I would rather not start.
Though we have disagreed, quite strongly at times you are not one of whom I was speaking

I didn't think you were. I have contempt for only a couple of posters here.

I will admit I have started reporting posts because the poster in question attacks freely and then reports all responses and I'm sick of it.
