Making jokes about eating cats is NOT funny. I just lost my cat. Even if I hadn't ... still not funny.

I was making a silly joke since many people here know me to be a pet keeper and fan of animals.

I have two things for you:

Aw, DS, he or she is gorgeous.

I may have overreacted, but losing my girl is still very raw. She was still quite young and it just wasn't expected to lose her so early.

FR~

Nice one MC - real cute!  [:D]

As an aside, but loosely related.... has anyone noticed you rarely see dogs or cats in a Pankistani/Indian neighbourhood??
Or any other pet for that matter?

When I lived in Peterborough, no matter which area we lived in, our pets came with us.
In one area of P'boro where we spent almost a year, it was a predominantly Pakistani/Indian culture.
Very few white people (or blacks) or anyone else come to think of it.
Generally nice people (with some odd habits) but it was an eerie place.
You could walk for a dozen or more streets around us and not a single pet was seen.
No dogs, no cats, no pet rabbits or guinnea pigs; not even a goldfish.
And... strangely enough, not even wild birds!
Not even the proverbial pigeons frequented our streets.
On the fringes, cats, dogs and garden pets (rabbits etc) frequently went missing, never to be found.

We actually caught a crowd of teenage Pakistani's playing cricket with a live hedgehog in our back street.
We had to call the police because we had the audacity to contront them and they went berserk at us.
They even stoned our dog and tried to hit him with a shovel over the back fence.
As it turned out, the mum hedgehog didn't live but her mate and her 2 baby hoglets regularly returned to our garden for food.
A week later, those same sad assholes were playing football (soccer) with the dad!!!
Sadly, the dad was dead when we got to him.
Two nights later, the two baby hoglets were cornered by our dog near the back door.
We rescued them and weaned them for 6-7 months until we could release them into Nene Park with help from the RSPCA.

We have since relocated about 200 miles south of there.
But.... in the predominantly Pakistani/Indian neighbourhoods, we see the same thing - no pets anywhere.
Is it normal for those cultures not to have pets unless it's goats for food or something??
I'm genuinely puzzled by it.

Actually, I think there are a plethora of cultures that don't keep pets and I think, as you seemed to be hinting to, that it's because they see just about any animal as potential food.

Looking at it from a different point of view, I can understand where people don't want to keep animals in their homes. So, I'm guessing that for some people, keeping animals is just a version of ranching.

I know that many of the Asian cultures that aren't located near a whole lot of water are not averse to eating dogs and cats. Japan and parts of Korea and China, being obvious exceptions.

South America, also has areas where the only reason a family would keep any animal is to fatten 'em up for later.

In the U.S. some people keep pigs as pets but that doesn't stop the rest of us from eating bacon.

Some of us don't eat bacon, either. I won't eat anything that comes from a pig.

Have you ever seen a feral cat behind a Chinese Restaurant?
