GotSteel -> religion may cause depression (10/4/2013 9:31:34 PM)

So there's a correlation between religion and depression, the religious are more likely to become depressed than the non religious. And the more religious one is the more that risk increases.

I can't help but wonder if religion and depression are two symptoms of a greater mental condition? (I'd say 'illness' is not really correct - being prone to mental processes which have no rational explanation could be a root cause of a lot of erratic behavior. But then I'm not a doctor, nor do I play one on TV.)

Interesting read. Thanks for sharing it.

There was this conclusion to the link though:

What does that mean?

Probably only that people who are prone to psychological problems tend to drop out of organised religion...

Having been dragged down a deeply religious path for a few years in my teens, and seen more than a few of the seriously fucked-up people who decide that they are going to try plunging deeply into religion to magically fix all their problems, I'm not surprised by the finding you did share in the OP.

I wonder how the upshot of this study might affect the uber-religist Tea Pots whom the GOP accuse of high-jacking their (previously) respectable Party.

More people should try Hinduism.

NoBimbosAllowed -> RE: religion may cause depression (10/4/2013 10:55:29 PM)

People who love colour and FANTASTIC design? DEFINATELY they should try it And any whom agree that men in belief systems should be AT LEAST as attractive as the women should investigate it. You should SEE my depiction of Rama!

SerWhiteTiger -> RE: religion may cause depression (10/4/2013 10:59:33 PM)

WTH? Shiva is way prettier than that guy.

Illustrating Shiva causes an imbalance in the narrative, Ser. One ALWAYS must save Shiva and/or Vishnu for last. Especially considering the efficacy of the TV show about the Battle of Lanka which was the highest rated tv show in India of allll time, and that is syaing something.

Even Monkey Kings have rules, man.

SerWhiteTiger -> RE: religion may cause depression (10/4/2013 11:30:38 PM)

But Rama is Vishnu.

NoBimbosAllowed -> RE: religion may cause depression (10/4/2013 11:50:32 PM)

yes, but Rama is an INCARNATION, and what we see here, on the soil, for the most of it. The narrative must respect the Listener, and the Listeners are on earth (for now).

meanwhile, Tiger, where's my fucking banana? (eek-eek!, other Monkey Army noises, but no flinging of poop)

SerWhiteTiger -> RE: religion may cause depression (10/5/2013 12:03:52 AM)

Get your own banana.

This topic is a banana. I bet somebody's disappointed that nobody bent over.

well, yeah. I'm an assman who freeze-framed about HALF of the first season of Mad Men for Joanie and Peggy.

but this thread is "bananas", not banana.

Rudyard Kipling is laughhhhhhhhhing at youuuuuuuuuuuuu...!

I don't find that *entirely* counterintuitive, somehow.

Hillwilliam -> RE: religion may cause depression (10/5/2013 5:31:44 AM)

FR

I see a chicken or egg argument here.

Does the religion cause depression or do the depressed seek solace in religion?

Teavangelicals are latest incarnation of religious right and Moral Majority cultural movements

59% of Tea Party supporters think government should promote traditional values.

But the authors acknowledge the wide variety of contrasting findings from other researchers in the field, make it difficult to come to a definitive conclusion as yet. The most that can be said with any certainty, they contend, is that if there is a link between religion/spirituality and psychological well-being, it is most probably weak.

Lucylastic -> RE: religion may cause depression (10/5/2013 6:14:58 AM)

much of religious dogma and the blind faith in it depresses the hell outta me... so I tend to keep away from it
