If I recall correctly, DOT brought in traffic engineers from Britain to help design them. I actually think they work better where they put them, to be honest. Both intersections I mentioned above were nightmares during rush hour and the accident rates went down after people started getting used to them. And the accidents that do occur tend to be fender-benders than car-wrecks. Around here, green means go, red means stop, and yellow means floor it to make the light.

Many roads where I'm from weren't built for the traffic that traveled them. Poor planning and fast growth, I believe. Which caused many people to run red lights, not wanting to sit through yet another cycle.

That's where replacing Traffic Circles with overpasses and ramps works well - there are no lights. The through traffic just keeps moving.

English is probably more Germanic than French, due to the Norse influence in Normandy. English itself has several influences, ranging from our own Brythonic and Celtic languages to Danish and Old Norse, French, Latin, Sanskrit and words borrowed from around the globe. If I had to nail modern English to any one particular language though, it would be Germanic even more than the original Brythonic. Lift comes from the Old Norse word for raise, while Elevator comes from Latin.
