If I recall correctly, DOT brought in traffic engineers from Britain to help design them. I actually think they work better where they put them, to be honest. Both intersections I mentioned above were nightmares during rush hour and the accident rates went down after people started getting used to them. And the accidents that do occur tend to be fender-benders than car-wrecks. Around here, green means go, red means stop, and yellow means floor it to make the light.

Lol. Yeah, I've been accused of doing this. Never realized I did until someone made a comment.
I agree, they are safer...after people get used to them.
Many roads where I'm from weren't built for the traffic that traveled them. Poor planning and fast growth, I believe. Which caused many people to run red lights, not wanting to sit through yet another cycle.

That's where replacing Traffic Circles with overpasses and ramps works well - there are no lights. The through traffic just keeps moving.

Oh, yes, in South Florida, 3 or 4 more cars go through after the light turns red - drivers who stop at the first second of a red light, or even sillier, at yellow, will totally be rear-ended.

To someone in the south, Yankee is anyone born above the Mason-Dixon line.
To those in the north, Yankee is anyone from New England.
To a New Englander, Yankee is anyone from Vermont.

To someone from Vermont, Yankee is either someone from the Northeast Kingdom or anyone who eats apple pie with cheese for breakfast.

And to somebody not from southern Louisiana, a Yankee is anybody who ISN'T from southern Louisiana.

To me, a Yankee is a member of a baseball team which, thank god, is NOT in the playoffs this year.

Excuse me, but the an American invented the Safety Elevator, he named it Elevator so it is not a "Lift"

If I am not mistaken, English is a Germanic language, so.....

Half German, half French.

Politesub53 -> RE: Words the brits are using wrong. (10/12/2013 4:53:34 PM)

English is probably more Germanic than French, due to the Norse influence in Normandy. English itself has several influences, ranging from our own Brythonic and Celtic languages to Danish and Old Norse, French, Latin, Sanskrit and words borrowed from around the globe. If I had to nail modern English to any one particular language though, it would be Germanic even more than the original Brythonic. Lift comes from the Old Norse word for raise, while Elevator comes from Latin.

Yanks: People born NORTH of the mason dixon line, or more accurately anyone not born in the state of Texas.

Yes but how far west is this "line"?
I live in Louisiana, this comes up often. I have never considered myself a Yankee, although many call me that..
I am from the Pacific Northwest. We are removed from all of that nonsense.
We won't discuss the "English" spoken here in Louisiana.

To answer your questions, I found an Official US map, this will help the brits out as well.

Yeah but I LIKE Texans for that POV.

and Tex Girls have great booties and have no qualms about wide, flat things made of wood kissing rounded-by-BBQ-booties belonging to Ass-tastic Alamo girls.

Love for the Tex girls. BIG TIME.

It's a lot more Germanic than French. There was a certain amount of balls spoken about this in French classes at school.

English started off as a mostly Germanic, heavily French influenced language. In the last few centuries, it's become the greatest linguistic rapist, pillager and and plunderer in all history, swiping vocabulary from wherever we please and infiltrating ours into almost all others.

As for French. The French haven't gotten over the fact that French is no longer the lingua franca of the entire educated, civilized world; and so they insist on a valiant, utterly futile effort to protect the "purity" of their language.

Geordies and people from South Shields and/or West Hartlepool are often called 'Monkey-Hangers' (and thereby hangs a tale !!).............just call any one of them by that name and watch them back-pedal and defend themselves with "It wasn't us, it was those bastards from xxxxxxxxx (whatever district).............it's funny though, they never deny it happened !!

NoBimbosAllowed -> RE: Words the brits are using wrong. (10/16/2013 10:52:53 PM)

i think it's funny that there is a site called chavtowns.co.uk.

that just makes me grin.

Don't blame the Hartlepuddlians[:)]? Easy mistake to make. Monkeys & Frenchmen look very similar [:D]!

Call anyone up north a monkey hanger, you'll probably get stabbed. They really don't like it [:)].
