I have to tell this to someone. The other board I frequent is patronized by geeks, scientists and other high minded individuals. If I had to guess (and I do not put much stock into the IQ test) they'd probably average around 120 to 125 on the IQ test. This is a story that they would absolutely love, but I can't tell it there. The reasons for this will become clear. On Wednesday I cooked a pumpkin. I roasted it in pieces so that I can make soup, pie, whatever. It was a bit larger than I realized so I offered some to an acquaintance from that other board. There is no way I could every eat 20 lbs of roast pumpkin before it went bad. So he shows up after work last night with his wife in tow. I'm not going to complain about that; she's a rather pretty redhead. Eye-candy I can't touch but still eye-candy, right? So I'm being a good host when they notice the dice. There is a highboy in my living room (won't fit up the stairs) with two jars of dice on it. "Oh, you play RPG's" "Does the pope shit in the woods?" Well the wife didn't know what that ws. We tried to explain but she just wasn't getting it. He suggested that we roll up some characters to give here a feel of it. Then things started going down hill. I asked the lady to pick any setting she wanted. She wanted 30 years in the future. Thinking on my feet I decided that it would be just after Skynet had become self-aware but before it had completely conquered humanity. She had a rather blank look on her face. She had never heard of Skynet, Terminator or Sarah Jane Connor. This story is getting long, but I promise you that it is nearing the end. OK, Moving on. "What kind of character do you want to play?" He decided he wanted to play a MacGuyver type. Sneaky and good with device. Cool, as a GM I can work with that. She wanted to play a type of scientist. The kind of scientist that can talk to atoms. She wanted to be able to talk to the atoms that were in the endoskeletons (not her words) of the robots. She literally thinks that atoms and molecules have memories and minds. Wait, what? Do you even know what atoms are? Please don't breed. Alright, I didn't say that but it was certainly what I was feeling. Tim Minchin says it better than me: Storm. I have spent most of my life studying science and I have yet to hear a molecule say, "Stop! Don't do that to me!" Anyone ever hear about the short bus?
