BTW why do you always assume every bad situation is going to be so serious that only deadly force is an option? Do you realize how rarely things get that bad? Do you realize that when they bring 10 guys to beat up one girl it has already gotten that bad? How badly would the girl have to be injured before she would have been justified in shooting them? You do realize that she had already told them to stop and they were ignoring anything she said?

If this story is accurate it changes everything WOODBRIDGE, Va. (WUSA9) -- A mother earlier this week told us that she fired a shot into the air after a confrontation with a group of teens in which she feared for her daughter. The daughter later disappeared. Now, police have released a "clarification" about the confrontation and the subsequent arrest. Lakisha Gaither told us that she sent her 15-year-old daughter, Brianna Stewart, to her grandmother's house in Fairfax after a violent confrontation with a group of teenagers at their Woodbridge neighborhood. On Saturday, Gaither told us she had a talk with another girl's mother after the girl had a dispute with Briana. Then, according to Gaither, a mob of teenagers turned on her daughter. "It was one particular person that was yelling at her. The others were instigating it telling that one to hit her," stated Gaither. Lakisha Gaither owns a gun and open carries in Virginia, which is legal, when she told us she saw a young man attacking her daughter. She fired a gunshot in the air to protect her daughter, said Gaither. Prince William County Police now say that Brianna Stewart "had been involved in an ongoing verbal dispute over rumors with another neighborhood juvenile, a 15 year old boy." According to police, Gaither and Brianna went to confront the boy. Police say Gaither found the boy near his home and there was an encounter that turned physical between the boy and Briana. Then, police say, Gaither took out her handgun and fired a round into the air. Police tell us that Brianna and the boy each claimed the other had punched them first, but that there were no reported injuries from the alleged assault. Gaither was charged with reckless handling of a firearm, say police. Police also released Gaither's mug shot. Briana is still missing.

its not the stories that were inaccurate: the police and news reported what they were told. Apparently the mother and daughter have issues with honesty. You know, I went to college for journalism. I was taught that you don't print something unless you've checked and rechecked your sources. Sounds like the news teams didn't really vette the story well my previous rant still stands. Has the situation evolved like origionally stated, I still would have defended her actions. If she went looking for him, armed, then she crossed a line. I'm still concerned about the girl being missing.

According to the Washington Times, the girl was returned, apparently unharmed. Thursday afternoon.

@Zonie63 I actually moved into a house on a seedy side of a seedy suburb of chicago years and years ago. I had to clean the place so thoroughly that I had to search the carpets for used needles. I found 5 hiding places. Under carpet slats had been lifted up. One hiding place was in a wall in a closet. 3 spots had rock cocaine in little baggies. One had a butterfly knife and one had 8 hollow point armor piercing bullets. I called the police station for pick up of the unfired rounds and the drugs and they ACTUALLY told me just flush the drugs and bring us the knife and bullets. They told me to put the needles in a glass jar like a pickle jar and throw them out. NOT kidding. I ended up taking the dirty needles to the local hospital and asking them to put them in a sharps container. (My hubby at the time worked for a hospital so I wasn't worried about someone thinking they were mine.) But I couldn't' believe they actually refused to come get the stuff. They told me to FLUSH it. sigh I ended up having my deputy sherrif brother come out from 2 counties over after work to take the rounds to the station by me. He wasn't happy. He found out that the house I had was renting had been raided over 6 times by cops and DEA and had been a major drug house. shudder I own my own home now. I'll never rent again.

Cops kept telling her there was no way to catch him and that no, she couldn't shoot him. One night the neighbors cat jumped against her window and she fired both barrels of her 20 ga That night the cops found a way to catch the prowler/peeping tom.

I used to have some, I always was skeptical of their effectiveness but they were dubbed cop killers because of how easy they were thought to go through bullet proof vests. And yes I know that Kevlar isn't like the ceramic or metal but you know how hype works. I know that a armor piercing hollow point is an oxymoron.

True but there is no version of this story were that happened. So had the original story been correct she should have shot one of the boys? Nothing random about that.
