Yes, I'm still having troubles with my legs swelling and hurting. I've been to two doctors who can't seem to find anything wrong with them. But as of tonight I've had a new symptom. As I was walking to the grocery store, my feet started falling asleep along with the pain. Has anyone ever experienced this? If so, what did it turn out to be? How was it corrected? And no, my shoes are not too tight and no I can't loosen the shoestrings. There are none. And yes, talk to a doctor, blah blah blah. I know I know. I plan on trying to find yet another soon who can tell me there's nothing wrong.

Are you diabetic? Borderline?
Lack of circulation to the extremities can cause this "falling asleep" sensation, tingling, pinpricks, springiness-feeling discomfort.
There's diabetic neuropathy (nerve pain), ranging from achiness to shooting pains.
Swelling can accompany this, from fluid build-up. Keep your feet and calves elevated.
There is no need for alarm, but these are early warning signs of poor circulation, more than likely.
It would not hurt to incorporate more exercise into your daily routine, longer walks, stretching, nothing too strenuous.

Two diabetics I know had this in their legs.* Another non-diabetic in one hand, which took a few months to go away.
Treating diabetes is a separate process, requiring an entire lifestyle change.
(Skipping meals will throw your blood-sugar levels out of whack.)
Neuropathy is treated by pain management, taking Tylenol-3 or something stronger to help deal with the pain. Eventually it can cause nerve damage.

Here is hoping you find a qualified specialist who can diagnose and treat you properly while you are in the earliest stages of your body telling you there is something wrong or unbalanced health-wise which needs to be brought back into balance through good (pro-biotic, anti-oxidant) nutrition and regular exercise.

Any chance you have a pinched nerve?
Have they tested you with an EMG or the such?

A pinched nerve is another possibility, as shiftyw has raised, but so hard to detect and pinpoint without doing an extensive amount of neurological testing.
The non-diabetic neighbor lady suspected she may have pinched a nerve which affected her hand two years ago.
She is not sure what happened. She remembers straining her shoulder while helping her mother move.
Her shoulder remained perfectly fine after a day or so elapsed.
She did say the neuropathy started out with strange sensations in two fingertips, then spread to other fingertips.
It hurt to apply pressure to them. Then it spread to two fingers and her thumb before affecting her hand and wrist.

The reason why I did not go into the above description at first is because littlewonder is having problems with both feet and legs.
But this is something to consider, since minor (bothersome) symptoms might have been ignored or overlooked many months ago.
Tingling toes, for example. I wonder whether you have experienced a slight loss of sensation, littlewonder, in your toes before this started happening.
The neurologist who ran multiple tests on my neighbor detected nothing he considered unusual, and wrote her a pain-killer prescription.

Honeybears, no I am not diabetic. I've had every blood test possible done and nothing, nada....doc said my thyroid levels were just one point off but nothing to worry about and said it wouldn't cause my issues. Other than that...nothing was found.

And no I haven't had any kinds of tests done except both looked and felt my feet, said they couldn't see anything wrong (even though Master and I both have seen major swelling in both feet) and they both took blood tests and found nothing except what I already mentioned.

Before the feet falling asleep, I have had swelling in both feet on and off and pain when I'm walking that feels like the tendons aren't long enough in my calves and they are stretching as I walk....that's the only way I can explain it. It friggin hurts like hell!

And then about 3 weeks ago I sprained or twisted my left foot. I couldn't put any pressure on it at all but over time it's pretty much gotten better but some days I still feel a weird ache in it but not painful like it was.

I just can't seem to win lately with my feet and now my eczema is starting to flare up again after years upon years.

And it's impossible to get into a dermatologist or any doctor in Baltimore at this time of year. UGH

Maybe Master is right and it's time for me to buy a scooter.

a good friend of mine with similar symptoms was diagnosed with ms....has your doctor looked into that possibility?

Thyroid issues generally go undetected cause lots of docs suck about them. It could be thyroid too.
Just a side note...I likely permanently damaged my thyroid during breath play...so if you're into that...it could be a result of trauma to your thyroid and therefore your calcium is messed up.
Has your calcium been tested?

BUT...
I had a pinched couple of nerves...really sounds similar to your issues, I would raise questions about that possibility with the next doctor.

Yes my calcium was tested and it was normal.

I also asked the past two docs about pinched nerves but both said it's highly unlikely since it's affecting both feet. But as soon as I find another doc I will bring it up again.

It seems like the only people who I ever find that have this problem are diabetics but I am definitely not diabetic so I'm just finding it extremely puzzling.

You know, we have known a number of folks who suffered from a variety of maladies and ailments for many years before it was discovered they had an untreated thyroid problem.
What is it with these doctors unwilling to test for this condition, which is so easily treatable with medication?
Is it the cost? Inflated ego or sense of self-importance that negates any patient having the audacity to second-guess them or self-diagnose?
You see this a lot with psychiatrists reluctant to switch meds when patients complain about adverse side effects.
(They would rather decrease or increase dosage of the same psychotropic drug instead.)

Not to be an alarmist, but my neighbor was worried there for a short while that she might have M.S.
False alarm, as it turned out, much to everybody's relief.

Glad to hear diabetes is not an issue, littlewonder.
We must know close to a dozen diabetics, some of whom are relatives, who have to manage their condition diligently.

some doctors give a test and with a thyroid problem you need to take the right tests, cuz there is more than one test for thyroid problems, its something easy to misdiagnose..

According to Dr Brownstein, a thyroid problem is mainly due to very low iodine (again, there are different forms of iodine).. Here is a (long) video of his reasoning, his experience, his explanation for why he has had good results with treating thyroid problems with iodine.. I think its worth listening to..

eta- about hurting legs.. I am not sure exactly what that means but I was having some (hurting) joint problems and started taking Vitamin D (15,000iu or more every day) & when I do that, that problem is resolved in me..

This may sound archaic, but have you been checked for gout? I'm no doctor, but I've known people with that malady and the symptoms sound familiar.

I'm just going to throw this out there because of a few symptoms you've mentioned in prior posts.
Have you been tested for Celiac disease or gluten intolerance?

I hate to jump on what seems like the latest fad but staying away from gluten has helped me tremendously with so many symptoms that seemed unrelated and could never be diagnosed by a doctor. I have been to several doctors, different kinds, several tests, and nothing. Until one day, my mother heard about Celiac and demanded her doctor test her. She was diagnosed as having it. I have not, and most likely will not, get tested. Her diagnosis and my improvements after going gluten-free was enough confirmation for me. And then adding gluten back into my diet at one point brought everything back in full swing.

My mother has had swelling in the feet and legs, tingling and falling asleep. I haven't had that problem, well at least not while walking. While she and I share some similar symptoms, we also have different symptoms. I don't want to list all my symptoms, but some bigs ones we both had are fatigue, depression, and insomnia. She gets small itchy bumps on her hands, whereas my skin just becomes extremely dry to the point of cracking, particularly around my fingernails. There are said to be around 300 symptoms, some more common than others. I can think of 12 symptoms of the top of my head that seemingly disappeared, and those are just the ones I recognize and am aware of.

Thanks everyone for your responses. They are greatly appreciated. As for MS, no I have not been tested by it but I don't have any other kind of MS symptoms so I doubt the doctors even thought about testing for it.

I haven't been checked for gout but I will bring it up with a doctor next time I find another. And I haven't been wearing the compression socks everyday but I do about 3 times a week. I can go a few days without a single problem but then out of the blue it starts again. To be honest, I don't feel any different when I wear the socks. I still feel swollen and in pain.

I've brought up the gluten thing with docs in the past but all of them just laugh and say it's the new fad and not really something to be concerned about.

I'm just learning to live with the aches and pains these days. Maybe one day someone will have an answer but until that day, it's just something I keep reminding myself that I'm just getting old and I have to learn to live with it.

Yeah, that's the general additude that feeds my negative opinion of western medicine.
I find it strange that so many can easily dismiss an idea while they have no clue as to a cause. Instead, a good portion of doctors just want to feed medicines to alleviate symptoms instead of finding the root of the cause. Many people are in tune with their bodies enough to know when something's not right yet their doctors don't listen. I've had one doctor, out of many, that did listen. Unfortunately, I moved.

My mother had to literally demand she be tested. Her doctor wouldn't listen to her either. After so long living without knowing, the damage has already been done.

I'm wondering if it may be blood clots. My mom had issues with the same thing and she is now on some meds that I think is a blood thinner. Just a thought

The last doctor said I have something called venous insufficiency which means one of the valves in a leg is damaged and thus blood backs up and that's why they swell. He said it's no big deal though and to just make sure I elevate my legs. So no blood clots though according to him. Yeah, no big deal to him but definitely a big deal to me being I can no longer walk very far and walking at all is painful. And now the numbness.

I would tell my doctor that elevating my legs is just not good enough. It is not working and between work, school, etc it is not possible to keep my legs elevated.

I have an issue with doctors that just give me a pat on the back and say hang in there. I'd find another doctor.
