One thing about European clubs is, we don't get 'gawkers' but that's because of the strict dress codes, which btw many people moan about!! No tourist is going to a) have suitable attire (no wide fronts allowed) or b) go to the expense of hiring or buying an expensive costume. If they did, then they would just be seen as voyeurs and lets face it, lots of exhibitionists rely on voyeurism!

Wide fronts?

I see lots of people skirting the dress code with 'kinky' tshirts.

Would also keep out a lot of serious players I know. Some of the fiercest doms and dommes I know favored black jeans, black t shirts and kick ass boots of various kinds (I asked one of the dommes why her boots never were high heeled, she said the sub is supposed to experience the pleasure of pain, not her *lol*). I don't care if people come to observe, as long as they show proper courtesy to others, but when they get in the way or make stupid comments, that is why you have good security and give them the heave ho *shrug*. More importantly, more than few of the people who dress in ways that would meet the dress code are just as obnoxious IME, while I love the uber fetish wear and wish I could afford it (or fit into it), many of the people wearing it are as bad as the gawkers.

As a dom I'm still not sure what I'm supposed to wear. [sm=dunno.gif]

I don't understand the angst over a chili contest. Heck, last night we had a turkey hunt at our local club. Subby turkeys and dom hunters - with nerf guns, pitch black and flash lights with red filters to restrict the light.

Well next weekend I'm going to an event with a pot luck dinner and viewing of the 50th anniversary episode of Doctor Who so I'm in no position to heckle.

In your case specifically... nothing... or at the very least not a stitch more than you're wearing in your profile pic.

Wide fronts? mens underpants

Kinky slogan t-shirts wouldn't get you through the door.

Whilst smart black (not black jeans) may be accepted in some clubs, many clubs want more than that. Personally I think that's a shame because a lot of people really feel twattish when they are dressed up in fet clothing and fet clothing doth not make a dominant! Like nj said, a lot of the hardcore dominants are the ones wearing 'just' smart black.

I think for Europe, its all to do with this cross over we have from the very large fetish crowd. Fet wear is huge in Germany, Paris and London and people will spend hundreds, even thousands on a costume they only intend to wear once. Much as I love dressing up, I do think most people who attend fet clubs are 'Fashion Easters'. They all want that picture in the the Rubber Ball pages and dressing up in the right costume guarantees an awful lot of attention.

Some people on FL recently wrote about a famous German fet club they were turned away from because 'well darling, they were just too fat'. [8|] Not only is there a costume snobbery, they want to attract the slim, stylish and beautiful people and they seem to have great success doing just that.

The BDSM clubs play things down a lot more and you see far more shapes and sizes in BDSM clubs than you ever would in a fet club. The clothing is often darker, though why that is I'm not sure and theres a lot more women wearing corsets, bustiers and burlesque type outfits. submissive men often wear latex and not a lot of it and dominant men wear smart black if allowed or uniforms of every nature. Lots of men and women wear riding outfits.

At the club I worked at years ago, the only criteria for entrance was the ability to pay the annual membership dues. The median age (both genders) seemed to be late forties-early fifties, with a few data points here and there outside the curve. Due to that, physical appearance (at least for the males) wasn't predicated by the size of their waistline as much as the circumference of the wallet, so to speak.

Dress code was generally business wear/street clothes through the door, and there was a complete locker room where the members tended to store their 'scene' apparel. Again, this had as much to do with the 'secret' nature of the club as much as anything else. It was literally two blocks away from Temple Square in downtown SLC, and a good number of the members were brethren whose stature and positions, either as practicing members of the Church or in its administrative arm would be jeopardized by being seen in leather and chains. Elder So-and-so would have a lot of 'splaining to do if his peers caught a glimpse of him as Ms. Demonica, Heavy Metal Hooker (which a lot of the CDs seemed to dress like. Another popular look was Alcoholic Housewife, but I digress). Likewise the ladies didn't want their friends and relations seeing them doing the strut in thigh-highs and studded leather gear, and the 'Jack' Mormons also took advantage of the privacy the club offered to indulge in other 'forbidden fruits' such as alcohol and tobacco use.

It was why I signed a non-disclosure agreement (long since expired now) upon my hiring there, as well a number of other tactics the club used to conceal its activities from casual observation. This is perhaps the root of my earlier lament about the commercialization of the scene via these marketing tools.

The Crucible in DC has lots of non-bdsm events. They have a day when people get together for yoga. There's another day when others get together to play games like dungeons and dragons and cards and such. There are also lots of dinners and movie nights. For Thanksgiving they always hold a dinner for those who are alone or don't have family or whatever.
