Status: offline 		The first link on the hood thread led my man to open mouth gags, which neither of us have used before. I have chemical sensitivities and tend to stay with safe materials like silicone, high quality leather, and metal.

He loves the look of this gag, but I'm concerned cuz it's made of rubber - does this mean it will have that nasty taste?

And what's that over her head?

Status: offline 		I personally like the taste of rubber, so that wouldn't stop me.

Spider gags, especially the one without a harness tend to small for me (I'm got a big mouth, surprise surprise).
I can just expel them by retracting my jaw.

I got the third one you linked to. I like it, and I think it's comfortable. The metal doesn't bug me at all. Keep in mind that the circumvent of the rings is too small to do penetration play. Also the straps are pleather, not real leather (the only time you get real leather on anything on that site is if there is an option to pay extra for it... everything else is pleather).

Dental gags are better for penetration play because you open more widely, but they're much more uncomfortable.

Keep in mind that most ring gags (at least on me) don't really stifle either sound or speech. They just distort it a little. (In case that's something important to you).

The thing over the girl's head in the first pic is a clear latex hood, with slightly yellow under tones.

Ya, he does want to do penetration play, and I was bummed that the wholesale-bdsm guys don't give the diameter like they do on Extreme Restraints.

Status: offline 		Most ringgags I've seen have a diameter too small for penetration play (at least if your guy's dick is not extra thin). When they list the diameter, they usually list outside, with the inside being notable smaller AND you don't really want to go with something that just barely fits him, cause he could swell and get stuck.

Dental gags work better, but they're harder on your jaw/cause fatigue more rapidly because they prevent sideways motion. If you've got joint issues in your jaw, they may be too painful to wear for a long period of time, and they could get your jaw to lock up.

If they would, they'd be more comfortable for the guy, because they have less metal in the way.
I suspect they'd be too big, but no experience there, so no idea. I've been hoping that one of these days one of the BDSM venders would come up with the idea to adapt that type of gag design for humans, because they're very minimalistic looking on the outside.

Something to keep in mind when considering size with ring gags is that they sit not on, but behind your front teeth. Because of this they can sit quite a bit lower than your teeth, and can have your teeth sticking out above the inner diameter. That may or may not be an issue for the play he's planning, it's something you can only find out by trying. On the larger diameters it tends to be that the gap between your corner teeth that is the limiting factor in size for a lot of people, unless you have an unusually big mouth. (The pictured model for example seems to have that gag sitting on her canines/bicuspids, but not on her incisors).

As far as measuring the largest size your mouth can take, use toothpicks broken to size with the ends blunted to measure the largest size toothpick you can fit from the top to the bottom of your mouth, right behind your incisors. You also want to measure the diagonal between canines as that's usually a good indicator (though not a 100% correct) as to the absolute maximum diameter you can take. The space between your incisors is irrelevant, as you rotate the gag to insert it, and then straighten it once it's behind those teeth.

Status: offline 		I've always had trouble with swallowing my saliva and/or breathing while gagged.
Does anyone else experience this?
When a gag (whether a solid ball-gag or an open-mouth gag) is in place, I can't move my tongue the way it seems to need to swallow my saliva;
and this causes me to choke, retch, and suffocate. This inability to swallow my saliva terrifies me, and somehow MORE saliva is produced by my mouth when there is a ball-gag or ope mouth gag in place.
I have tried to practice moving my tongue to swallow, but it can't maneuver when I am gagged.
I really want to be gagged, but it only lasts for a minute before I am drowning in a mouthful of saliva.
I even bought a round whiffle ball (the plastic one full of holes), and this helps IF I am placed face-down so that the saliva can dribble out through the gag's holes, but does not work if i am standing upright or laying on my back.

Technically you don't need your tongue to swallow, you can swallow only using your throat (which is something you need to learn to do when deepthroating).

I'd practice like this: get a drink out, preferable something cool so you can really feel it well. Now take a big sip and simulate in your mouth what you'd do to swallow without actually swallowing. Really pay attention to the movements your tongue and muscles make. Swallow and take a new sip but not to big this time. Now tilth your head back a little and open your mouth slightly and try to swallow again. Take a third sip and insert your thumb in your mouth press on your tongue and swallow again.

My guess is that swallowing with your mouth open is going to be harder than with your thumb inserted which means that it's not the immobility of your tongue that's the issue, but insufficient voluntary control of your throat muscles. You basically use your tongue to trigger you throat "knowing" that it's supposed to swallow, which is something you can unlearn doing.

Practice a lot with drinks (it's easier with larger volumes of fluid, than saliva because smaller movements are more obvious that way), focussing really on your throat, and focussing on using your fingers or willpower to hold your tongue in certain ways and still attempt to swallow. Once you can isolate the muscles in your tongue from those in your throat, you shouldn't have an issue anymore.

Status: offline 		I have created my own gag from PVC. This is from scrap from construction sites. This was a number of different lengths of the tubes. Of you find something similar you want it can always simply cut to length. Once you get the proper size you want you need to take some sandpaper to smooth the edges so it is smooth and clean. You can find different diameters for your mouth and the the size you want in your mouth. This is durable convenient and can be any size you want. The one I use is to open the mouth and it is long enough so it almost reaches the throat. That bypasses the mouth and straight to the throat. It almost forces the throat to swallow in reflex.

The issue is that some rubber has chemicals linked to cancer: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phthalate

Sometimes you'll hear someone talk about a gag with a horrible chemical taste that they couldn't get rid of, that's what they're talking about.

Status: offline 		What I'm trying to say is that not all rubber uses phthalates. Just because something is rubber doesn't mean it will have the horrible chemical taste.
