Thank you, Tj and Chatte! Great suggestions!

It's funny, my mom used to do the steam pot for me when I was a child. I'll make a steamy bathroom for my kids. Can't believe I forgot about that.

Much better today. I still have a slight cough but have not had a severe bout.
These suggestions have helped and I will have for the future!

We've been sick all week. And this is the sickest I've been in three years.

So, himself and I were joking: When we were kids we had cold medicine that knocked your ass out and then you felt better when you woke up. In the 90's they started telling us that we didn't really want all that stuff in our cold medicine.

Now, we have cold medicines that barely do anything and require that you hand over your ID to purchase.

I swear I was seriously considering a shot of hot tequila and cinnamon.....

I hate the restrictions they've placed on some medicines. It's usually late night where, out of desperation,
I'll go to the store just to discover the pharmacy is closed and no one can help.

Hope you both get better soon!

To OsideGirl:  I sort of understand what you mean by touting the wonders of the "old stuff".  Supposedly codeine & hydrocodone make for great cough suppressants...but since they've received negative publicity for being in the big, bad Opiate category, unless you go to a doctor to obtain an Rx, you're pretty much stuck with the otc remedies.  Dextromethorphan = synthetic codeine.  Any kind of cough medication with the suffix "DM" will contain the abovementioned. To get rid of the congestion or to loosen it up so's you can go , "ccchhhhock...TOOEY!" and spit out the cause of the funtime cough..go for guaifenisin. I forgot how they initialize it. Best bet: go for a medicine that contains both. Or, iffen ya'll don't wanna go that route, there's allus the hot herb tea (check with one of the wise old sages at your local healthfood store WHICH herbal tea is most effective), throw some honey into it & hope for the best. And avoid dairy foods as they will exacerbate mucous production.
It also can't hurt to toss some vitamin C & zinc down the hatch. Any doubts, c'k with the pharmacist. They're more knowledgeable than doctors 'bout these things.

When I was growing up the goto stuff was Contac Capsules.
The secret ingredients were Belladonna alkaloids.
