There has to be something that actually helps with a cough. At least, that's my hope.

After a nasty cold, I develop that cough that seems never ending. Usually peaking midday, sometimes causes vomiting, then at night again while trying to sleep.

I've tried just about every OTC medicine, tea and honey, cough drops and throat sprays...the usual.

Can anyone recommend something that works well for you?

Ok. The exact same thing happens to me every time I get a cold or the flu..!
Here's the only thing that helps me.

Brandy. Honey. Lemon. Dash of cayenne pepper.
Pour brandy into a plastic container. Add honey (a LOT). Until it's syrupy. Add a big squeeze of FRESH lemon. Dash of cayenne.

Keep it in the fridge. I pour some into a mug each night. Heat it up in the microwave.

The downside. You can't really sip on brandy all day long...but it does quiet the cough, soothe your throat, and help you sleep

Feel better !!!

A terrible cough can be caused by lingering post nasal drip.

Pneumonia can cause coughs that cause vomiting.

But assuming it is neither of those I have had good luck with Buckley's cough preparations.
It can be hard to find.

The other thing that I am hearing a lot about regionally is something called Fire Cider.

I'm so glad I can now say I've heard of one other person with the same problem! Although, since I know how awful it is, I'm sorry you get it too. When a person near me comes down with a cold, I immediately start fearing the cough!

I've never tried brandy before. Sounds like a good time to try it, though :)
Thank you for your suggestion! I'll try (just about) anything!

Go see the doctor. You could have a sinus infection or bronchitis.
If so, then you'll need antibiotics.

It's definitely not pneumonia.
It starts as a normal cough, which leads to a dry scratchy throat, which then leads to more coughing. The excessive amount of coughing causes me to gag then, sometimes, vomit. On a side note, if I cry hard that sometimes leads to vomiting as well. I think it's just one of those unfortunate things that are "normal" for me.

Thank you for the links. The fire cider looks interesting (loved the list of uses, especially when I reached the boredom portion).
Sounds like this might be good to try for the daytime and, per the website, at first sign of a cold.

Adding to my list, hope I can find it! Thank you!

Two things you might have lying around the medicine cabinet: guaifenesin (mucinex) and/or tylenol w/codeine or hydrocodone (vicodin). Guaifenesin is OTC and does a great job liquefying all the gunk in your lungs so you can cough it up and get rid of it. Technically it's an expectorant and not cough suppressant, but it helps move stuff through much more quickly so you get better faster. Drink lots of warm water to help with this. As far as the opiates: a tiny little bit will stop a cough without making you sleepy or goofed up. Like a quarter of a 5 mg vicodin tablet would be all you'd need.

Feel better soon!

Tea with lemon and honey and no sugar. A bottle of nasal saline spray (orange and white bottle). Spray liberally until the mess up there gets stirred up and then blow it out. Look at the color. If clear...allergy if another color yellow or green- infection. Don't let it change to bronchitis. Feel better.

Oh, how I wish I had Vicodin in my cabinet! It'd probably be all gone due to my neck, anyway.
I'll need to rummage through to see exactly what we do have. Maybe there is something lurking in the back. Especially after last night, with three hours of sleep, I could really use it.
I will agree with you on Mucinex - it does do a fantastic job breaking things up.

I've tried saline spray before. I just can't do it! I don't know how other people can do that or eye drops. I'm such a baby when it comes to that stuff!

Thank you everyone for your suggestions and well wishes! I'm starting at the top of the list and moving down till I have a winner!

I use eucalyptus essential oil in my shower. By breathing it in, it helps.

Hope you feel better!

My post disappeared for some reason but I had coughing until i vomited last summer. My doctor gave me steriods and loratamine, a histamine antagonistic drug. I started feeling better almost immediately. Be careful. You don't want to get pneumonia.

Hope you feel better soon.

Sunshinemiss, the oil sounds nice even if I didn't have a cold. This may sound like an extremely dumb question, but what do you do with it? Would I just place an open container in the shower, or sprinkle it in the stream of water?

Anniezz, I had the same problem last night with my posts disappearing.
I definitely don't want (and certainly can't afford, with three kids and no help) to get pneumonia! My cough seems to be a little better today. I have great health insurance, but I really try to stay away from doctors and scripts unless absolutely necessary.

Kalikshama, I'm very stubborn. I have a few reasons why I am reluctant to go to the doctors, but I think the stubbornness is the main drive behind it. I blame it on my father. Now that I think about it, I don't ever recall him going to the doctor when I was younger.

Thishereboi, I checked out the ingredients and with about 3x the amount of menthol then my Halls, I'd certainly think they'd do a better job! I'll have to trade-up. I still wish Luden's worked well.

Thank you again everyone for your suggestions!
Last night I took a combination of the brandy concoction and a dose of Mucinex. I slept pretty well, only waking up once for a brief period, then went right back to sleep. I slept right through my alarm so I'd say it knocked me out.
I'll still have to find something for daytime, though.
I am getting better. Just slowly. If it doesn't improve more in the next few days, or seems to worsen, I'll definitely go see a doctor.

Glad you are slowly getting better.
In case sunshine doesn't pop in.

Sprinkle a few drops of the oil on the shower floor. Not directly in the stream of water. ( and NOT where you could slip and fall).
The heat of the water will draw up the vapors from the oil into the steam in the shower.

Glad the brandy is working at night !!! I'd be lost ithout it.

Do you ever lose your voice?? That happens to me often as well. My friends like the reprieve...

I've never lost my voice, possibly a disappointment for some, but it does get very weak and soft (I have an already soft voice). I try not to talk that much. It irritates my throat and I often get teased because I have a "sex-phone voice".
Cause, ya know, I'm feeling all sorts of sexy while I'm hacking up a lung.

ok, it sounds like its in your chest and you probably are coughing up phlem.. the very best thing that works for me, since I was a little kid.. take a big pot, like what you cook pasta in.. put a good amount of water in it and bring it to a boil.. my mother would sometimes throw in some chamomile (loose or tea bags) in also but that's not really necessary, only if you happen to have it.. once its boiling take the hot steaming pot someplace where you can put the pot down (without damaging your furniture- use a towel under or a large hot plate?) and can comfortably lean over it with a towel over your head (so its like a tent over the pot of hot water so the steam cant easily escape).. breath in the steam for 10 minutes or so each time.. be very careful, its super hot!!! so you might need to let it cool enough where its still steam but not a burning steam.. breath in so the steam can break up the mucus in your lungs, do this several times a day for several days (or until you are better).. I find once a cold gets into my chest, doing this is the only thing that will work for me..

This wont help you this time since you are too far gone but I found that getting certain otc cold stuff & sucking on these tablets at the very first sign of a cold, it helped me get over the "cold" in 2 or 3 days and with only minor symptoms (not a full blown cold/cough).. I got it at the dollar store but then they stopped carrying it It was called "No Time For Colds" which is I think a less expensive version of "Zicam".. I think its the zinc that helps stave off the cold majorly.. for me at least..
http://www.amazon.com/TIME-COLDS-TABS-LEMON-Size/dp/B000KOQAP0

YMMV..

FR:

Some good advice here, I'll add mine:

Drink lots of liquids. Make a hot honey and lemon beverage, you can sip this all day. If you're trying to rest, add the brandy.

Get someone to go to the store and buy you the liquid guaifenesin, you can find types with the cough suppressant, which if you're vomiting you need.

Ditto on the color of your snot or expectorant (sorry for the ugly mental image). Clear is okay, yellow or green go to the doctor today.

The steam bowl Tj suggested will help clear your lungs and sinuses so you can sleep. If you have eucalyptus essential oil you can use it there, 2-3 drops are all you need. You might find eucalyptus at your drug store. If not use Vicks.

I use Ricolas for my throat, b/c they are herb based. They are the only thing that helps my itchy throat from sinus drainage.

http://www.ricola.com/en-us

The drug store will have Ricolas.

Elevate your head when you're trying to go to sleep so your sinuses can drain.

Use Vicks liberally on your chest and throat, and cover. It helps to safety pin a sock around your neck to keep it warm. YES, a sock around your neck.

Continue this for 2-3 days and if your'e still this bad, sorry, go to the doctor.
