RottenJohnny -> Rockwell painting sells for $46 million (12/4/2013 9:46:18 PM)

When I was a kid, my mom always kept numerous puzzles in the house for those days when she needed a reason to distract the family...kids going crazy, snowstorms, creating a break for herself, etc. Some of my favorites were the ones we had of Norman Rockwell prints. One of them was a 1000 piece version of "Saying Grace", a classic Rockwell. Well, it appears the original painting has just sold in New York for $46 million. A record price for one of his works.

I'm no expert art critic but I love fine art and I've had opportunities to stand and stare at works from many great masters (Picasso, Dali, Van Gogh, etc)...really beautiful stuff. But for some reason, there's just something about a Rockwell that I can connect with. Everything about them is just so straight forward...complex but clear...nothing abstract. And always a slice of American life.

Over the years, I've come across articles from critics who've said that his art, as excellent as it was, would never measure up to someone like Picasso. Now, I couldn't be happier to see his works starting to sell for those amazing prices. I think he deserves that kind of credit.

(I tried to embed a small version of "Saying Grace" put it didn't work...sorry)

I've always liked Rockwell. I've got a print of one of his works, a Huck Finn-evocative painting of two boys lazing in a raft, in my kitchen.

Anyone who says he's not a true artist is a fool. His works are as evocative as anyone else's. Picasso had his Guernica to evoke complete terror and panic, Rockwell had his works to evoke a simple, homespun, classic Americana, frequently with a gentle sense of humor. Artists are still mimicking his style to this day.

I think I know the one you are talking about. Is there a dog on the raft with them?

I wasn't even thinking about the humor he put into his work but you're absolutely right. There is always something in there that makes you smile.

I absolutely love Norman Rockwell, I have several plates, books and paintings. (I wish they were originals)

So this was quite interesting.

Yep, there's a dog on the raft.

If you look at Rockwell closely, you'll always see that the necks are always the same, very personal. Rockwell's art is "every man".

I have 2 (some number of "2,500") lithographs, signed....they're worth a few grand each....nothing special.

One of my favorite artists.

I have a Dali (27/4,000), also not worth a lot....frankly, I can't figure out a damn thing in the damn thing but, they say, his signature on a matchbook is still worth 20 grand (unless of course it's 27/4,000).

It's all good.

One should never buy art because it'll go up in value....rather, because you love it.

The above 3 were given to me, but the rest of my collection is spectacular, gives me great peace and....if it's ever worth more than a pack of smokes....my kid will be happy.

(I'm happy today).

You know, despite me running my mouth about it, now that I think about it, the only thing I actually have is the puzzle of "Saying Grace".

I think it's time for a new wall hanging. [:)]

I was about to ask if you wanted to sell any of them until you mentioned your kid. You should definitely pass it on...and I hope they find them as enjoyable as you do.

As far as Dali is concerned, what can you say about abstracts? I mean, really, Venus de Milo with Drawers? Who else woulda thunk it? [:D]

shiftyw -> RE: Rockwell painting sells for $46 million (12/5/2013 8:17:30 PM)

I love Rockwell. My grandmother has MANY plates and took me to see and exhibit of his. I adore his use of light and humor, and I'm so glad that it broke records and sold for that tremendous amount!

yeah... or you should at least like it.. I admit that I don't like Rockwell's work at all so I would not own one.. just not my thing.. mostly, I like more abstract works..

I dunno.. $46 million for 1 painting.. I just keep thinking about what other ways I would spend that kinda money (if I had it).. I mean, you could buy a small city (or Detroit?) for that! [:D]

Sidenote: The selling price for Detroit is coming in at around $540 million...and it doesn't come with any art. They already sold it all.

darn it. I won one of those art contests when I was young. Rockwell was one of the chapters I received in my 3 yrs of tutorials. He provided a small drawing as part of my grade for my work. Since growing up I really wished I had kept it.
