Medical students (doctors) receive roughly one course on medications. Then, drug company representatives (sales people) come to their offices to sell them the latest drug that their company is pushing. They offer free samples and frequently, the doctor receives some money for returning a survey, getting some pictures taken, etc... It's not a pure process in that the information given to doctors is biased. THAT is their education on drugs. If you want to know about pharmaceuticals, ask a pharmacist. It is they whom are educated without regard to company profits. To the OP, if you are feeling the beginnings of a suicidal downward spiral, act on getting help immediately. To anyone taking psych meds... do your own research. Is there a medical test showing that you actually have a deficiency in brain chemicals? No, there isn't. It's a guessing game. Kind of like, there's cat hair on the carpet in the living room, so a cat must live here. What if, the cat was carried in and out and no cat lives there? What if it just looks like cat hair? That kind of logic is used in prescribing psych meds in conjunction with profit motives. I am not totally against all psych meds. But, I think it is downright immoral to ingest drugs or to give drugs to kids, before taking all other natural steps in self-care. For example: Sleep Water Sunlight Exercise Social contact Hygiene Laughter Massage (touch) Nutrition If you aren't excellent with all of those things, then you do that first! Once you've mastered those self-care steps, if you still suffer, then try: Meditation Yoga (physical movement plus meditation) Individual counselling Group therapy Hypnosis EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Re-Processing) for PTSD - Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Once you've exhausted all of these steps (which have zero side-effects), then have a few appointments with a psychiatrist to discuss psych meds and to fully understand the reasoning for a diagnosis, why a type of drug would be given and what the expected results should be. If the results aren't reached within a time frame, then what would be the plan? Then AFTER you are educated and have a plan for the use of drug therapy, then you actually try drug therapy. Pills simply are not a cure-all. They are like fast food. Lots of calories and little to no, nutrition. Drugs cause diseases: epilepsy, heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity... this list goes on. And, many make people suicidal. Many people suffer injuries in car accidents because their reflexes are tanked. The losses are formidable and in some cases, deadly. So, if you have a mental illness, take responsibility and be active and educated in your own treatment. And, by all means, notice if drugs just aren't working!
