New details emerge in Colorado school shooting

CENTENNIAL, Colo. — Armed with a shotgun, a student entered Arapahoe High School and opened fire, hitting two other students before fatally turning the weapon on himself in the latest incident to confront a nation already debating the effects of repeated episodes of gun violence.

In a series of news conferences, Arapahoe County Sheriff Grayson Robinson said the shooter entered Arapahoe High School in Centennial armed with a shotgun and looking for a specific teacher whose name the gunman called out. The student made no effort to hide the shotgun as he walked through the halls, deep into the building.

Robinson said the shooter, whom he did not identify, entered the school on the west side, apparently seeking a confrontation with the teacher. Alerted by other students who had seen the shotgun, the teacher left the building.

“He took himself away from the school in an effort to try to encourage the student to move with him,” Robinson said of the teacher, praising his decision as “the most important tactical decision that could be made.”

Okay, at least this was not a mass killing and no one but the shooter died.

Still, a teenager with a shotgun got into a school to hunt a teacher.

SadistDave -> RE: Anotther school shooting. (12/14/2013 2:20:39 AM)

Can you guess what didn't happen in approximately 98,800 other schools? That's right! No other school in the U.S. had a shooting incident yesterday.

The shooters name is Karl Pierson. The news agencies have, so far, neglected to say how he obtained the shotgun. He was 18, but no one knows if he owned the weapon or stole it. No one has released any information about his mental health either. I'm not sure about the weapon, but I suspect we'll learn his psychological profile doesn't stray from any of the other suicidal crazies that decide to go shoot up their schools.

Dave, I am a gun owner, the only new gun legislation I support is stricter back ground checks, and I know that in every other school in the US no one shot anyone in a school.

I also know that yesterday a number of people were killed by drunk drivers around the country,

No one is calling for a ban on cars or stricter guidelines on buying alcoholic beverages or getting shitfaced in a bar

a bunch of guys beat the crap out of their wives or girlfriends an/or children using anything handy.

No one is screaming about the injustice of that and wanting to control the sale of belts, bats, or any other blunt object.

There were a large number of people texting and driving who had accidents, with and without fatalities.

NO one is calling for the ban of cell phones that does not have hands free options.

There were who knows how many hunting accidents, and not necessarily with a gun.

No one is calling for the ban of bows and crossbows

Somewhere in this country some jack ass finally got his pit bull, German shepherd, Doberman, Mastiff or some other "dangerous" dog breed to the point that it will attack anything and quite probably kill what it attacks.

Alright there are people who think it is the breed that is dangerous and not the asshole that owns the dog

A number of vets committed suicide yesterday because our government has put so much red tape in place that the VA is incapable of treating these people in time to prevent them from harming themselves or others.

No one is calling for the ban or control of the sale of anything that could remotely be used by a vet to commit suicide.

I am sure there were other types of non gun related deaths that were self inflicted, the result or carelessness or intentional desire.

My point is that putting up a sign that declares a school a gun free zone is not going to stop a person with a gun from entering that school.

Lucylastic -> RE: Anotther school shooting. (12/14/2013 5:48:17 AM)

194 dead children under the age of 12, since Sandy hook....All by guns, homicides, suicides and accidents.
One year......

That is nothing short of a stellar record and must bring tears of purest pride to all Americans, Dave.

While it wasn't a drunk driver, a guy lost control of his car and ended up in a public transit waiting area. Luckily there was only one guy waiting for a bus, and he was able to get out of the way of the car, so no one got hurt. Obviously, there is damage to the vehicle and the bus stop, no human injuries or fatalities.

To prevent this in the future, I propose we ban snowing on a road. That should help cut down on accidents in the colder months. [8D]

(FYI, I took your posts in the manner you intended.)

Dave, I am a gun owner, the only new gun legislation I support is stricter back ground checks, and I know that in every other school in the US no one shot anyone in a school.

We don't get this problem here because most people here don't own guns that can be stolen or used by others.
Those that do own a gun have gone through rigorous checks.
Our licensing laws are much stricter and tighter than in the US.
Nobody is allowed to own an arsenal.

We do here.
If someone gets shitfaced in a bar and causes trouble, not only the offender is arrested but also the barperson that sold the drinks to them and often the estanlishment is fined for allowing it.
Many of our town centres are alcohol-free zones.
Anyone caught with open alcohol has it confiscated.
Habitual offenders are also arrested and charged for breaking the alcolhol laws.

a bunch of guys beat the crap out of their wives or girlfriends an/or children using anything handy.

No one is screaming about the injustice of that and wanting to control the sale of belts, bats, or any other blunt object.

We have laws preventing the sale of such items without proof of age.
Many more are also being charged with assult with a weapon (as opposed to common assult) when such items are used in domestic violence.

NO one is calling for the ban of cell phones that does not have hands free options.

It is illegal in the UK to use a cell phone whilst driving.
It gets you a fixed fine and points on your license.
Go over your points (12) and you lose it and have to re-take the test again.
If you cause any form of sersious incident whilst using a cell phone you could be (and many are) charged with dangerous driving which carries a 10-year ban, a high fine, and often a custodial sentence.

quote:

ORIGINAL: jlf1961

Those sort of weapons are encompassed within our firearms laws.

Alright there are people who think it is the breed that is dangerous and not the asshole that owns the dog

Many of those types of dogs are banned in the UK.
Not specifically because of the breed as such but because irresponsible owners cannot/will not control them properly.

No one is calling for the ban or control of the sale of anything that could remotely be used by a vet to commit suicide.

Again, most of this shit is governed by our single-payer healthcare system.
I'm not saying suicide doesn't happen but it's quite rare over here amongst veterans.

Exactly!!
And that is why many of us who are not US citizens shake our heads at the numbskulls that defend the current gun laws in the US.

MsMJAY -> RE: Anotther school shooting. (12/14/2013 6:26:41 AM)

And this is the part where (instead of showing sympathy for the students who were wounded) everyone inserts their political talking points in support or in opposition to gun control. Seems like we have a discussion of this type every couple of weeks. Of course it also seems that we have a school shooting every couple of weeks as well.

I am very sorry to hear this. I am glad no one (other than the shooter) was killed and I hope and pray there is some way to help deter something like this from occurring in the future.

There is a 15 year old girl in critical condition after surgery, but....no body has mentioned her.

Because.... this sort of thing is just soooo avoidable.
Your gun laws are allowing such incidents to happen.
Not just once or twice... but with regularity.
And for many of us outside of the US, it's just idiotic to support the current laws and expect it not to happen... again!

God bless all of the victims of any harm done to children everywhere and families & friends of them.

God bless that particular girl, and I hope that she is able to survive and get strength and support that she needs.

I'm glad it wasn't worse, but it's always bad.

This always makes me hug my children tighter, and be grateful for simple things.

I add my blessings to your own. Yes, I hug my own child a little tighter too; and my heart goes out to kids who have to go to school under conditions that I never could have imagined when I was in school.

If anything, I'm surprised this sort of thing doesn't happen a lot more often over there. If there's one group that you definitely don't want tooled up, it's high school students, I'd have thought.

DarkSteven -> RE: Anotther school shooting. (12/14/2013 7:16:41 AM)

I'm still freaked out.

I live in Centennial. It's a very nice, settled, quiet town.

The news outlets aren't mentioning this, but when Mitt Romney campaigned here last year, he spoke at Centennial High School. Yeah, it's that affluent and white bread.

It's at the corner of University and Dry Creek. I drive by there whenever I attend a beekeepers' meeting or bring the cat to the vet.

This is my home turf.

jlf1961 -> RE: Anotther school shooting. (12/14/2013 7:50:35 AM)

Freedomdwarf, I assume from your posts that you are British, if not I apologize.

As for the British single payer health system, while it is in some ways better than the system in the US, there still seems to be some major issues, not the least of which is Care system now 'unsustainable' after £3bn cuts, social services chiefs warn as well as cuts in funding for other parts of the British health care system.

I disagree with the banning of private fire arm ownership, I do agree on nationwide registration laws, and a ballistics data base of every fire arm in the US. That way if a gun is used, a ballistic match can be found even if the firearm was never used in a crime, and the owner located.

And for firearm owners who scream that it is one step closer to letting the government come and take our guns away, may I point out that IF such a move was made, it would take a hell of a lot more personnel than is currently in the employ of local, state and federal law enforcement agencies, so it would mean using the US military inside the borders of the US, which CONGRESS has to approve, and no congress would approve such an action, so the sitting president would have to dissolve congress, thus letting every citizen in the bloody country know that the shit is about to hit the fan....

And we all know that would start a second revolution or civil war or whatever you want to call it.

They have bemoaned cuts in every sphere of public run/supported utility.
And like many countries, we have to make some cuts so we can reduce our defecit.
But, just like any household budget, they juggle with the figures and find a solution.
Some, just use the cuts to be scaremongering everyone else.
But sometimes, inherent waste needs to be weeded out and abolished.

And how would that help in the gun crimes we see aired daily?
In a lot of cases they sieze the gun and know the purpetrator.
That doesn't stop the killings happening in the first place.

Lucylastic -> RE: Anotther school shooting. (12/14/2013 8:12:34 AM)

its a shame you couldnt actually include the fact that they are talking about elderly care, and make out its the whole NHS...
You do realise we have had the system for almost 70 years? its changed over the years, adjusting, lacking, understaffing, too many petty bureaucrats, but its a existing service, and will never be perfect.
