jlf1961 -> The Game is afoot! (12/14/2013 10:15:50 AM)

Never really understood what Sir Arthur Cannon Doyle meant when he wrote that, but that is beside the point.

Alright, now for my nephew and grandson's sake, I have been going along with this christmas thing, you know, Santa, reindeer, sleigh (I am from Texas, what exactly is a sleigh anyway?)

I have even given myself permission to attempt to believe in all this myth and legend, however, today I noticed something.

We took Damian and Thomas (my grandson) to see Santa. I noticed a few things about this alleged "Santa" immediately.

The hair that was visible under his hat was a salt and pepper color, while his beard was white, my beard matches my hair color, as is the case in just about every bearded male I have seen, regardless of species.

All the pictures depict Santa wearing wire frame round glasses, this "Santa" was wearing what appeared to be military issue black plastic framed glasses.

He was not wearing boats, but black shoes with some sort of vinyl legging things.

His "fat" body was inconsistent, and his belly did not jiggle like a bowl of jelly when he laughed.

Damian was suspicious of this individual immediately, absolutely refused to sit in his lap and he had a questioning look on his face as the picture was taken as if to say to the world "Something just aint right here."

Thomas was a little more subtle. He had a list of questions for this guy.

1) where was his reindeer at while he was seeing the children?
Answer: behind the store. (Thomas had me drive around back to see for himself, no reindeer.)

2) Where were his elves that were supposed to pass out candy canes?
Answer: In the bathroom. He asked me to check in the men's room, and another little girl checked the ladies room, she was quick to report the bathroom was empty, and with that promptly told her mother that this was not the real Santa, and refused to have anything more to do with the individual.

Thomas sat for the picture, refusing to smile and looked at Santa with all the intensity of a CIA interrogator.

With this done, we did what little shopping needed to be done and left the store.

Thomas has a plan for Christmas eve. He wants to use one of Pappy's (daughter in laws dad) motion controlled and automatic trail cameras in the den where the christmas tree is aimed at the fireplace.

My daughter in law said to me in a whisper, that she could easily disable the camera so there would be no problem. I pointed out that her fathers cameras took an automatic picture every three minutes, and continuous pictures if the motion detector was triggered, and Thomas is not dumb, he knows what a time stamp is on pictures.

Thomas has already eliminated the possible existence of the tooth fairy, last month when he lost a tooth, he tied a thread to it and placed it under his pillow, with the other end tied to his finger. He caught mommy in the act.

Thomas is not dumb by any stretch, in fact he may be too smart for his own good. I do believe his doubts about Santa started last year.

Last year, one of his older cousins came outright and told him there was no Santa. After everyone went to bed Christmas eve, he got up, got the flour canister down, proceeded to the slate floor in front of the fireplace, and spread a coating of flour all over the slate floor, using about 2 pounds of flour in the process. Grandma and Pappy were not pleased.

Pappy was not pleased for another reason besides the mess, he had to go to the store and get more flour so grandma could finish the baking.

Go rent a Santa costume, and get caught by the trap. That'll give him something to chew on!

A couple of problems,

1) I am too big to fit down the chimney, I would go so far as to say anyone with a body width of greater than 14 inches could not get down the chimney.

2) I lent him three old fashioned pressure triggered burglar alarms, explained that he should put a thin piece of wood over the triggers, that way they would go off when someone steps on them.

You probably know of the kind I am talking about, sound like fire alarm bells two inches from your ear, say around 110 db, and so sensitive that a cat stepping on the trigger will set them off.

You see, he is going to be at daughter in laws dad's house for Christmas eve and Christmas morning. I am proud of my grandson, not only is he smart, he is really light on his feet, he can sneak up on anything.

And since I told him it was a secret between him and I, and he should not tell his mother, I am sure that game camera is going to get some really nice digital photos of her scared out of her mind when she triggers those thing.

As for Damian, even at 22 months he knows that nobody, and I mean nobody can move around the house at night without the dogs raising seven kinds of hell. Which is why when Kera decides that she wants out at 5 in the morning, he pokes his head out his door to see just what is going on. If I am up, I get a morning PopPop, and he goes back to bed. If his grandmother is up, it is "Nanny, juice pwease." Followed by him chasing the dogs to the back door.

I thought the "Santa just appeared on film, and there's no evidence of chimney use." element would be the part he'd chew on.

But, I like your plan a whole lot more. Please report the outcome, with pics of course. [:D]

Both boys sound like smart fellas. They must have some good nurture...

As soon as Damian was crawling, I went to work for him to develop his problem solving skills. He is very adept at figuring out just how to retrieve something from what appears an impossible situation. He has used the broom to retrieve balls the dogs hide under the beds, at meal or snack time, he has determined which spoons or forks he is allowed to use, and get the appropriate utensil for what ever the meal is.

We had to actually put up a gate to keep dogs restricted to different ends of the house, he has figured out how to open it from the wrong side by reaching through the slates and working the slide lock.

Even though he is too short (not for long the way he is growing) to actually use the door knob to pull a door closed, he has figured out how to close bedroom doors when no one is in there to keep unattended dogs out of the rooms.

Lastly, he has discovered that if he cant reach something or get to a place he wants, all he has to do is drag something that he can climb up on to put the object in reach, or so he can complete the climb to where he wants to be. This includes all beds in the house, the table, the counters, and today I caught him dragging a chair to the laundry room, and followed him. He wanted on top of the freezer to see out the window and watch the dogs napping in the sun.

I have not figured out how he knows that it is time to feed the dogs, but at exactly 6:30, he is at the dog food bin with bowls calling me or his grandmother to feed the dogs.

He also has a good enough vocabulary to tell the dogs to get back, lay down and sit, and the dogs actually listen.

Thomas is more analytical though. He compares everything to some standard of his own, be it Santa, food (which means veggies are not to be eaten) or educational games. He is very adept at using his mother's tablet, and has developed the skill of guessing passwords that will allow him to extend his computer time.

Between the two of them, we either have the future criminal masterminds that will take over the world, or a research team that will break the light barrier... or manipulate wall street to be the first trillionaires, beat the odds in the casinos of the world or something equally historic.

tell them that Santa has special stealth, that he got in trade from each country's spies, in return for gifts. The more we let them decide the end of the story themselves, the more their imagination stretches to find something that is acceptable to them. the next time they have questions about it you ask them what they think the answer is. my children came up with the most outlandish and yet plausible to them alibis and excuses.

Good catch on the hair color. That kind of thing has always bugged me going back almost 50 years with this guy...

Boi, you need to quit agreeing with things I say, it sets a bad example.

In all seriousness though, I hope you have a Merry Christmas and happy New Year. May you get everything you want for christmas, I dont say deserve, cause if you have done anything half as bad as I have this year, you are gonna get a house full of coal.

Why perpetuate a lie?

I have a sense of Whimsey and I believe the children should be allowed to be children.
I liked believing in Santa when I was a child.
I suppose I don't want to take that away from the children in my life.
my children are now all grown, and they were appreciative of it.
.they cannot wait to be Santa themselves.

there are certain traditions that I grew up with that may not be proper for you....
this is one of them.

That's why.

My brother is a Post Master in a small post office and each year, he becomes Blue Santa. We went to deliver fudge to his place the other day and met the carriers, one being a long time associate. When he was a carrier, he would deliver the mail that way. He loves being Blue Santa...making people cheerful.
