ORIGINAL: MariaB @Darkfeather, I have piercings and they don't go off at the airport but even if they did, I would reassure myself that they've seen it all before!! I have a piercing (on my girly bits down there) and I was told they wont set off the equipment at the airport but something sure as hell did when I flew.. I convinced TSA that it must be the button or zipper on my jeans.. but honestly, I do think it was my piercing.. and here in the good ole US of A, they have seen everything but that doesn't mean you wont get some cranky by-the-book bitch that makes you take them out.. and yes, its happened and been reported on before.. they are just plain nasty here.. [>:] As far as a PA goes, I have met only one guy that had piercings on his pride & joy but he told me he did it cuz it feels good to women (inside).. That was his story anyway.. I have flown all over the world including America recently and I have never yet set a machine off. Perhaps I'm just lucky or perhaps some of the American airport machines are set too high. Security metal detectors are used to look for dangerous objects – knives, guns, explosives. When they are set on a very sensitive setting they will pick up pens, metal buttons and even fine jewellery. Because this is hugely time consuming for security staff, most machines are not set on such a sensitive level but from what you have said, some obviously are. I fly from Italy to the UK or Paris to Italy at least half a dozen times a year and I haven't even given my piercings a thought but even if the alarm did go off, it really wouldn't bother me if I had to show some female security staff my piercings then so be it. I wouldn't find it humiliating, just inconvenient and if I had to do it every time I went through airport security, I'd just make sure I was their earlier. What I wouldn't do is take my piercings out on the chance I may be stopped.
