Wow! Now that is a powerful image! I say we scrap the Satanist statue and go with this one!

I say let them build it. It won't be a big deal if we don't make a big deal out of it.

And suppose I want to build a monument to Dagon, God of slavery. It depicts black people in chains.

Would that also not be a big deal?
Is that also a good idea?

you mean like this one?

Thank you for the history on it. Its an amazing work of art!

Where in bloody Sumeria did this snapshot occur? (and those black folk are positively green).

it is in Livorno (Italy) it celebrates the victory over the barbary corsairs by the Order of Saint Stephen and it's the main monument of the city, by the way in italy there was also a 4m (13.12 feet) statue of a baphonet but the nazist destroied it during the war.

edit: bronze tend to turn green with time

The ten commandments are the "foundation" of most of our most basic laws.

Really? The first 3 commandments directly contradict the First Amendment. After that we get a rule forbidding you from working on the Sabbath, followed by one requiring you to honor your parents. Later we get one forbidding adultery, and further on one forbidding you from feeling covetous.

How are the laws of the United States based on these rules?

Agreed. If a Christian group gets to put up their religious statue, then so does every other religious group that wants to. It's all or none - it's unconstitutional to give special treatment to one religion.

FelineRanger -> RE: Satanists trying to build 7 foot statue in Oklahoma (1/9/2014 9:27:35 PM)

I posted this on my own Facebook yesterday or the day before page with the comment, "I can't wait for the statue of the Flying Spaghetti Monster."
[sm=soapbox.gif] I want my Flying Spaghetti Monster statue, dammit!

I would be very very curious how you could possibly hold that point of view. The 10 commandment say what an individual must do.

The first amendment says what the government may not do.

Its like comparing chocolate with diaphantine equations.

I agree that this is how it is usually interpreted these days.

Permitting a group to put up a statue could well be conditioned on the appropriateness of the display.
For example - is it really appropriate to put a sculpture of a crucifix in a toilet on public lands?

Separation of church and state is one standard. Do you really think it the only one?

This is twisting words at best, the 10 comandaments say what a christian or a jew are supposed to do not an individual, than you have the first amendement that (like any other costitutional law in the world) says what kind of laws can't be enacted and 7 out of 10 for you are incostitutional so they just can't be considered the base of your laws. By the way the other 3 are common to almost all the society after the invention of agricolture, so there where not to kill and not to steal and not to lie laws even before the 10 comandaments.

If this issue were being presented by people from Oklahoma, then either they should be allowed to place a monument there that represents their religion, or the Christian monument should be removed. However, since the people pressing this issue are from out of state, I think they should stay home and mind their own business.

The First Amendment is not bound by state lines or residency.

I wasn't talking about whether it was legal or not. To me it is just plain bullshit for someone a half continent away to try to force change somewhere else. "Just because they can", doesn't make it "right".

I don't think anybody is claiming it's the only standard for what's allowed, i.e. I think we could all agree that a monument of two naked people having sex would violate certain other prohibitions our society has.

However, having looked at it, they seem to want to build a very classy monument to Satan.

HipPoindexter -> RE: Satanists trying to build 7 foot statue in Oklahoma (1/10/2014 8:27:01 AM)

Kudos to them! Way to show some initiative. The Satanic Temple, to its credit, isn't that namby pamby mail order scam that Anton Lavey founded. It's a celebration of Satan as a literary figure.

I never understood why people messed around with all that Hail Cthullu nonsense when literally the greatest mythological monster of all time is just waiting around in Paradise Lost to become a pop culture icon again.

EdBowie -> RE: Satanists trying to build 7 foot statue in Oklahoma (1/10/2014 10:15:55 AM)

The same way the Freedom Riders, and other 'outside agitators' tried to force change in places they didn't live?

Which is exactly the argument about Mt Soledad. It's a giant cross on government land, where they hold religious ceremonies. Either the cross comes down or other religions get represented on the scale.

Wow, can you just *IMAGINE* what some really determined guy on say,.... a "D-9" Caterpiller Bulldozer and under perhaps the influence of strong drink or drugs could do to that hunk of metal while the police were on a much *higher priority* call?
Wow, what a mess, and if he ran it over under 25 tones of brute force there wouldn't be much left,.....would there?

I think there's a few fairly shitty representations of the horned one in pop culture that have seriously lowered his stock. It's all been downhill for Samael since Bedazzled (the proper one from the '60s), sadly.

Point well taken. At least he had a better send-off than that poor fellow in the robes and the sandals got in that porno that Mel Gibson shot.

I don't have to image, Christians are constantly committing hate crimes against atheists, fortunately Satanists are more moral or that ten commandments monument would be long gone.

This also happened a month ago in New Jersey when Christians set an atheist funded Saturnalia billboard on fire. Link

Cue the "no true Christian" defense.

Well gee Steel, I have disdain for both of those groups!
Maybe they'll pulverize each other! What? No Satanists and no Christians? "What a woinderfull world."
If I were an executioner and a muslim, satanist and christian were in front of me I'd be torn about who to do first! I'd probably go left to right. I don't want any of those three groups to survive!
Sheesh, I'd volunteer to hand out guns and ammo to both sides for that! "Here, these are great kid, hollow points, deadly."
I hope "Hell" is full of a thousand "Church Ladies."
(Oh yeah, and I'm fucking*offended*here , now everyone come to my assistance! I said the Magic word! (Ahem,....offended.)
