2 things come to mind:
1) the message is being weeded out by the recipient's bulk mail folder and just sits there until the system automatically dumps it (6 months maybe?)
OR
2) the recipient is screening his/her messages by hovering the cursor over it and decides not to read it.
Both of these fall probably fall under a miss on your part; either you aren't writing a message that people want to respond to or you aren't reading the profile carefully enough and are outside the parameters of what the recipient is seeking (age, location etc).
