I can only speculate why he didn't arrest me. In Utah guns are ok with law enforcement but they hate those hippy dope smokers ? Maybe since there wasn't any pot to find, his probable cause and illegal search wouldn't have held up for the gun. It's funny how people who dislike illegal drugs are fine with this sort of thing who would hate the same kind of harassment looking for guns. It all sucks whether the law is infringing on the rights of minorities, dope smokers or law abiding gun owners. Think about it, we have the tax police, the money police, the federal police, the federal drug police, the federal gun and bomb police, the state police, the county police, the city police, the National Security police, the Depatment of Homeland Security police. Now all we need is the abortion police.

My guess (and its just a guess) is that they were not really searching for a gun. I believe they wanted an excuse to get into the car to search for drugs. I mean come on; 3 additional marked cars came and they even searched the engine compartment? How likely was it that a gun would be in the engine compartment of the vehicle? It is pretty common for highway police to target people from coastal states, thinking they may be running drugs to states up north. The drug interdiction classes that officers take teach them how to use whatever excuse necessary to breach that vehicle and search for drugs. Since the number of American households that have a gun sits at about 47%, anytime you ask "you own a gun?" you have about a 50/50 chance of the answer being yes. The officer probably just played the odds and guessed about the gun.

He had out-of-state plates. Many things that might get a cop's attention don't qualify as reasonable suspicion--race, culture, age, haircut, bumper stickers, location, type of car, time of day, etc. If they stop you for one of these reasons, then they usually have to find or make up a more legitimate reason for the stop. Are they trained to do that? If they are, doesn't that make the entire department corrupt?

When he was in the police it was all manner of bizarre things: Crombie-coat wearers, Jaguar drivers, Rolls-Royces parked in the wrong (i.e. poor) areas of town . . . . He hated it when they banned smoking on the London Underground. 'Obviously not all smokers are criminals', he said, 'but most criminals smoke' (we're talking the early 70s and before, here).
