needlesandpins -> Would you? Have you? (2/2/2014 10:25:40 AM)

a post I made else where on the site got me thinking.

we have a forum for art, and photography on the boards, and I've seen various works in there. mostly it's photographers.

what I'm wondering is this; have any of you ever commissioned a piece of BDSM art of yourself, or another in your life, or would you consider it? I don't mean photos, but an actual painting, or such.

Or is your thought that you have photos, so why bother?

cheers

I've often thought the same thing myself.
So much photography, which is in no way a bad thing - but I sometimes do sometimes wonder where all the other forms of art are.
Or indeed why people may not want erotic art (bdsm or whatever) on thier wall, or commissions of themselves "doing thier thing" in some form of erotic artistic interpretation other than photographs.
Paintings can even be reverable on the wall, lets face it!
Or boldly displayed in a personal dungeon!

Needles,

When I was younger a friend of mine showed me a very beautiful BDSM inspired piece. The painting was of a previous lover--I think. She has it hanging in her bedroom (still), and I lust after it every time I see it.
Although both mediums are good in their own right... it's a different experience seeing a picture of a woman bound vs. a painting of a woman bound.

I agree Allie, there is something very different between seeing a photo, and a painting. Photos are a great thing, but it just struck me as odd that I have rarely seen good bdsm/fetish art paintings amongst the multitudes of photographers. There's plenty of graphic art if you google bdsm art, just not the more personal touch art.

this thread has had plenty of views, and yet no-one is answering. so I'm guessing that no-one ever thinks about it.

I was a huge fan of Bob Ross on PBS.

For those that don't know; Bob was a very soft-spoken but passionate painter. His show was called "The Joy of Painting". He made painting look so easy and his voice was so soothing that I went out and spent hundreds of dollars on art supplies.

Well, no one wants to view my stick figures. Certainly, no one wants to buy them.

Conversely, my mom's second husband was a professional photographer. My first job was in his dark room, at the age of 7 ("Develop. Fix. Rinse." for 4-6 hours a day).

After being taught how to do the retouching, he started teaching me how to make photographs.

Since then, I have always been waaaaaaaaaaay more comfortable behind a camera than in front of it.

Also, I'm much more of a "naturalist" in that I like to capture people candidly, as they're enjoying themselves. I would never "sit" for a portrait. If I were to do this, the artist would have to be willing to work from a photograph.

I am not saying I'm opposed to the idea, per se. I just think that in this day and age, asking people to get worked up about paintings is like Spain, offering trips to "exotic" Italy, 200 years after Christopher Columbus made it to the new world.

Being the found lover of mummification bondage. I have always wanted to do a full body casting. Does that count?

He was fascinating to watch. "Happy little trees". I was hooked.

So was I. He was such a mellow man & a joy to watch.

I'm not really into any kind of erotic art so it would be a no for me. It just seems a little tacky to me even if it is done tastefully. Yeah I might put it on my computer but definitely not in my home.

NuevaVida -> RE: Would you? Have you? (2/3/2014 9:26:24 PM)

I love paintings. In many cases they're just so much more exotic/dramatic to me, in a good way. I've never seen BDSM paintings but it's a cool idea. Would I have one in my home? I'm honestly not sure. Maybe if subtle. And not of me. :)

RemoteUser -> RE: Would you? Have you? (2/3/2014 9:33:07 PM)

I've drawn people, but not because they asked for it, just because I felt like it - and usually gave them the results afterwards to do with as they wished. I was stunned last year when someone approached me and thanked me profusely for drawing them; I didn't even remember doing it. It was an off the cuff sketch I did back in the 90s. Apparently they framed it and show it off, who knew? o_O

(I'm not that good. But it is fulfilling to know it was enjoyable for someone else.)

i don't know this Bob Ross, so i shall have to look him up. i like it when i can watch other people work. even if their style isn't the same as mine i can still learn something from them.

i am a portrait artist, and mainly do pets and wildlife. i do paint people, but it's always from potos. I've never had someone want to sit for me. I'm also a realist artist, so my work takes me quite a long time to do. However, I'm not into hyper-realism. i respect the talent it takes to achieve it, i just see no point in reproducing something that looks like a print of the photo.

Mummyman321, if that's your thing, then yeah, i see no reason why it wouldn't be. each casting would be individual to each person.

NuevaVida it's the more subtle stuff that i though people may like of themselves. can i ask, what would you consider to be subtle? you can pm me if you'd rather.

RemoteUser; i have done that too with friends, and family, and their pets. however, for something such as this particular subject, well I'm not part of a group of people that i know in real life where I'd have photos to work from, or that I'd know their particular kinks/fetishes enough to be able to just draw/paint them, and hand it over. if i wanted to have a go at this sort of thing as a practice subject I'd have to ask for models to take photos of. that then puts me in another predicament in that i can take a good photo, but I'm not one that has loads of gear to dress up a model, i don't do bondage to a point that i could tie up a model and then get the photos I'd want as reference. i could ask for people if they'd be willing to give me photos to practice from, but of course i can't work from a photographers work unless i have his written permission. so for me just doing this off the cuff as something that isn't my subject would be tricky.

Hi needles, I'll pm you when I can. I had some photos done of me about 5 years ago that kinda describe what I'm thinking of, lemmie see if I can dig them up.

SoulAlloy -> RE: Would you? Have you? (2/4/2014 11:30:33 AM)

It would be lovely if I could afford one, but I'd probably be too embarassed to display it

I know some clubs that like to have artwork around, and encourage local scene members to donate any art they'd like displayed.
