SweetAngel43211 -> Treating Migraines (2/6/2014 12:54:20 PM)

I get a lot of migraine headaches and I can't afford the get my meds for it right now. Are there other ways to help them other than dark, quiet rooms and things such as ibuprofen or Aspirin based medications I could try? I can't have most nsaids other than Tylenol because of stomach ulcer and allergy issues... The Tylenol doesn't do much but take the slightest edge off of the pain. They get really bad sometimes to the point where I can't even remember my own name...
Any suggestions are welcome!

OsideGirl -> RE: Treating Migraines (2/6/2014 1:01:45 PM)

I take an herb called Fever Few every day. It has cut down the number and the intensity.

When I feel a migraine coming on, I do Ibuprofen or Tylenol with a good stiff coffee. That almost always takes care of them at this point.

I Also use Migra Spray - http://www.amazon.com/Migraine-Headache-Relief-Natural-MigraSpray/dp/B000SDOYYW but if you can't afford your prescription, that will probably be out of your price range.

Thank you I will look into it.. My prescription is 10 dollars a pill for the generic... So even to get 10 of them is 100 bucks....

Edited to take off an extra letter lol...

Many years ago I stumbled onto the fact that some cold & flu meds would lessen the harshness of my migraines, and often would stop them. Later, after Excedrin came out with their migraine tablets I switched to those, but it had to be the gel caps, not the caplets, even though they listed the same exact ingredients.

SweetAngel43211 -> RE: Treating Migraines (2/6/2014 1:39:25 PM)

Thank you igor2003. I can't take that medicine at all because of the Aspirin in it... I wish I could though!

Rub an ice cube into your left palm. The blood vessel that "feeds" a migraine runs through the left palm. Slow down the blood flow and the headache "dies".

You can also pressure point the area between the thumb and forefinger to achieve the same goal.

I have never suffered from migraines, so I really can't vouch for the veracity of this but a friend of mine , who used to get blinding migraines, a few years back, told me that somebody had reccommended that he take a couple of spoonsful of 'Glucodin' every day and it will ease the symptoms. He figured it was really going to cost him very little and it could do no harm, so he tried it and found it worked. He still gets a migraine now and again but very rarely and very mild.
I don't know if you have 'Glucodin' in the States but it is pure glucose in a white powder form and can be used as you would sugar.
I hope this may help.

SanguineRaven -> RE: Treating Migraines (2/6/2014 2:28:50 PM)

I constantly suffer from migraines, every day, all day.... it sucks

SweetAngel43211 -> RE: Treating Migraines (2/6/2014 2:56:42 PM)

Thank you I will have to give those ideas a try.

SweetAngel43211 -> RE: Treating Migraines (2/6/2014 2:58:15 PM)

Thank you, I will look into it and see what I can find.

My OH used to suffer migraines regularly from the age of 4 (she's now 48).
They were sooo bad she'd be locked in a dark silent room for many hours and sometimes even days on end.
Recently, she has worked out what triggers them and now she rarely ever gets one.

I would work on what is triggering them than what meds to relieve them.
This is certainly a case of an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

For a lot of people, it is a certain type of food that triggers a migraine.
For my OH, she knows that dark chocolate triggers instant migraine and too much (or too strong) cheese or banana tends to kick one in a few hours later.

LafayetteLady -> RE: Treating Migraines (2/6/2014 3:49:15 PM)

Freedomdwarf beat me to my point. Knowing what triggers a migraine is half the battle. Nitrates are a common trigger, so avoid things that contain nitrates, like hot dogs. Wine can also be a trigger and so can stress.

For me ibuprofin is the only thing I can use when I get a migraine, but that doesn't help you. In my experience, tylenol is worthless for anything. There are anti-inflammatories that aren't NSAIDS and are way cheaper than ten bucks a pill. Ask your doctor.

Also, don't wait for it to become a full blown, please cut off my head migraine. At the first hint of pain, take something. I've made that mistake too often and it is much harder to get under control. One thing I have notices is that the more your head hurts, the more you focus on the pain and then your head hurts more. So even though. It can seem impossible, try to focus your mind on something else. Use visualization to create peace in your mind, whether it be relaxing on a beach ot watching snow fall (in your head). It sounds funny, but one visualization technique I use, I call "snowflakes and rainbows" (yes I know it sound ridiculous, lol). With eyes closed, inhales deeply through your nose and imagine it forming a snowflake. Think like how frost spreads on a window. Let you mind create the shape. As you exhale, imagine your snoflake turning into a rainbow. Not the pride rainbow, but like those created when sun streaks through misting water.

Doind thing like that first, focus your thoughts on something other than your pain. They also force you to regulate your breathing. It really can help the pain.

Other things I have done:

Showers as hot as I can stand (use candles to light the bathroom), and alternate between the water hitting the base of your neck and right above your eyes.

Alternating ice between those two spots.

Using a combination of ice and heat on those spots, ie, ice above eyes, heat on back of neck and switching back and forth.

Migraines suck. For those who don't get them, they really don't understand how much worse than "just a headache" they are. There have been times, it hurt so bad if someone offered to cut off my head, you are ready to let them just so the pain will stop.

But I can honestly say since using any combination of the above, I have been able to keep mine under control.

freedomdwarf1 -> RE: Treating Migraines (2/6/2014 4:12:53 PM)

Just thought I'd add something that isn't so obvious to some people....

Sometimes it's not just food stuff that triggers a migraine.
For my OH, if she sees a field of rape seed in full flower - that can set one off.
It's the intense colour (that particular colour) that does it for her.
Also, certain pollens can do it.
They start by making her sneeze then it turns into a full-blown migraine within minutes.

Most migraines are usually an allergic reaction to something.
You just need to find out what things trigger them off.

http://www.chiaricare.com/Chiari-1-Malformation/Symptoms.aspx

I don't know how to link it but I have this problem and it causes most of my issues... Short of very dangerous surgery to try and correct it treating the symptoms is the only option I have.... I have learned that other than this condition stress is my biggest trigger... I do my best to cut down on the stress in my life as much as possible, but it is impossible to get rid of all of it. I am going to give your visualization trick a try as well and some of the other suggestions and see how it goes. Thank you all for your suggestions.

freedomdwarf1 -> RE: Treating Migraines (2/6/2014 4:47:23 PM)

I just looked at this link and it seems to be a description for just about any and all symptoms for any type of headache and upper body pain of any sort.
You can fit their descriptions onto 90% of people's upper body pains and it'd be totally wrong.

It's a bit like the saying "I'm ill" rather than "I have a cold" or something more specific.
It also sounds too much like a 'this is the "ill" clinic and we have the cure for it'.
It reminds me of many adverts about 'liposomes' or somesuch for miracle cures and drugs that were supposedly better than anything else on the market. It turned out that the word was coined from meaning 'coated' or 'encapsulated' and didn't have any medicinal properties whatsoever - it a was runaway PR success but a huge con.
Sorry, that looks too much like a medical con-trick to be a real symptom of something specific and it would appeal to those who are gullible enough to fall for it.

I would get a proper diagnosis of what you suffer from rather than some drivel like this.
If you take the wrong meds for a condition that you don't have you can do more harm than good.

ETA: I don't "do" stress at all. I make a point of making sure that nothing, absolutely nothing in this world, gives me stress. I don't dwell on things. I deal with any problem promptly and very pro-actively. If I can't deal with it, fuck it, it ain't my problem. Simples!
If something bugs me, I go to sleep - using a hot choccy drink and my pain meds to help if necessary. If I can relax by listening to my fave music on headphones, I'll do that.
I do whatever to absolutely kill or avoid stress at all times. Fuck the world and everyone who lives upon it, my health is more important and the fucking world can wait for once.
Ergo, no stress, no stress-related problems. :)

SweetAngel43211 -> RE: Treating Migraines (2/6/2014 4:57:53 PM)

I have had it confirmed by a MRI and a Neurosurgeon.... I just wanted to show the list of symptoms... I am not only looking for medication options either so the visualization suggestions and the ice on the hand ones are things I am definitely going to be trying...

I do a lot of the stress reducing things as well..

Here is a better link from the Mayo Clinic... I have type 1

sexyred1 -> RE: Treating Migraines (2/6/2014 5:08:36 PM)

This is what worked for me:

1. Imitrex (generic Sumatripan) works in 30 minutes.
2. Excedrin Migraine is ok if I feel it coming on.
3. Ice packs on eyes and back of neck.
4. Make sure not to go too long without hydration or eating and if driving long distance, take breaks.

If really stuck on one which is really rare, I take a course of Medrol, a steroid, for a day, it breaks the migraine when it gets "stuck".

I never had a specific trigger like food or scents or colors.

It's also virtually impossible to get rid of stress, but I guess some people have ideas on that.

I know my migraines are rare these days, maybe because I have something way worse now.

SweetAngel43211 -> RE: Treating Migraines (2/6/2014 5:13:16 PM)

Thank you :-). I will try the ice packs and remembering to eat and drink. I tend to forget and then realize it is 1 or 2 p.m and I haven't eaten or drank anything for the day yet...

I am so sorry for what you are going through and I hope things go really well for you and you go into remission quickly.

sexyred1 -> RE: Treating Migraines (2/6/2014 5:14:32 PM)

Thanks and I hope you feel better as well.

SweetAngel43211 -> RE: Treating Migraines (2/6/2014 5:24:18 PM)

You're welcome and thank you :-).
