Based in the biblical scripture "they will take up serpents" a group of fundamentalist Christians routinely handle poisonous snakes during their services. The idea is that if your faith is strong enough, you wont get bit, or if you are bit, you will suffer no ill effects... quote: Jamie Coots, co-star of ‘Snake Salvation,’ dies of a snakebite Pastor Jamie Coots, a serpent-handling pastor and co-star of the “Snake Salvation” reality television show, died Saturday (Feb. 15) after suffering a snakebite during a church service. He was 42. Coots, pastor of the Full Gospel Tabernacle in Jesus Name in Middlesboro, Ky., was found dead at his house around 10 p.m. Source Okay, personally, I believe that faith can move mountains, in a manner of speaking, but this belief tends to lend credence to my theory that humanity is getting more and more stupid. Thoughts?

Their idea is right. Darwin's theory of evolution through natural selection was also right. Obviously, thanks to these snake handlers, the frequency of stupid alleles in the population decreases. As long as they continue their snake handling, therefore, the human species will become ever less stupid.

I can appreciate where they're coming from, but God made me smart enough to leave poisonous things alone! I think Lucylastic posted tongue-in-cheek, but I don't think it's wise to terrorize any of God's creatures to prove your faith.

FR On a more serious note, I'm always puzzled by why folks zero in on that one saying of Jesus with a literalism not applied to the rest of the Gospels. Found a church website that makes the point better than I could: Why Does Jesus Say His Disciples 'Will Take Up Serpents' (Mark 16:18)? The author says, "Deliberately handling poisonous snakes or drinking deadly liquids expecting God's protection is definitely contrary to Christ's teachings." Disclaimer: I know nothing about this church or its other teachings. I just think they're right about snake-handling.

I already had a post about this in humor because I didn't want to get into the P&R mud-slinging but, I have to admit that my posting it in "Humor" was a bit cold. I try my level-best to not make fun of others' religious beliefs for a couple of reasons; A) I just don't think it's right to do and 2) it separates me from the knuckle-dragging God haters. However, this guy obviously missed the point that someone brought up earlier. I was raised to believe that presumption is a sin. To do something dangerous, thinking: "Well, my Lord and savior will protect me" is tantamount to presuming to know what the almighty is thinking. Not a good idea. I was reminded of (I think it was Robbie Kneivel?) the guy that walked a tightrope across part of the Grand Canyon and the whole way, he was mumbling, asking Jesus to protect him and how he was doing this to show the world that his Lord and savior wouldn't let him fail, blah, blah, blah. At one point, I almost found myself hoping he'd fall just to show what a stupid idea presumption is. Instead of indulging that thought, I changed the channel. To me, this kind of attitude harkens back to the old rallying cry of "Christians aren't perfect. They're forgiven". Well, that's crap, too. Ostensibly, if one claims to be Christian, they are saying that they are trying to be Christ-like. No one expects perfection but it's amazing to me how many fall so short of the mark so often.

They usually reject all denominations as human made and as carrying the corrupt by the devil.
