jlf1961 -> Solution to the Problems with American Government (2/20/2014 6:01:27 AM)

At 3 Am this morning, a couple of neighbors decided to raise hell (a few coyotes were howling,) which in turn woke up the dogs, who had to raise hell about the neighbors, which of course woke me up.

Now everyone knows that cognitive thought at 3AM is not exactly anyone's best ability when woke from a sound sleep, but I had a EUREKA moment.

This is what I came up with to solve our problems in the US.

1) First we do away with the Republic and go to a straight democracy. We issue smart phones to every citizen, and put broadband internet in every home with a decent computer.

2) We establish a council of elders, they will determine what comes before the voters to be decided.

3) Every citizen votes on every item that comes up that needs a national vote. Failure to vote means that you are placed in stocks in front of the courthouse and have rotten garbage thrown at you.

I dont think this will last long, maybe a couple of months, then we go back to the system we have now, and everyone can quit bitchin about the government. If the common citizen is not willing to do the job, then they can shut the fuck up.

This is gold.

What was the purpose of your message? It makes no sense to me..but that is only my humble opinion.

What I'm wondering about is how this is going to shut the coyotes up?

A good example of why this would be a disaster is what happened when we had the media blitz of starving kids with flies in their eyes in Somalia. It is soooo easy to manipulate or influence the masses with the type of media we have today. Those people did not want us... did not need us...in fact hated us and what we stood for. Yet the majority of America demanded we help... Look what happened.

Now imagine what would have happened right after 9/11... The American people were furious and in no frame of mind as a group to make rational decisions. The world could have very well been at war if not for opposing parties in Congress fighting... Bad enough as it was.

Our forefathers were geniuses and understood that legislation and government actions needs to be debated and a two houses of Congress and opposing political parties was the way to do it. Mistakes can and are still made but the likelihood of bad decisions are lessened and eventually corrections are made if needed.

It seems like nothing is ever done with all the political wrangling but in the end the important things get done.

Butch, I think you did not catch the point.

I have talked about "direct" democracy on these very boards, before. I don't see why it couldn't be done with a couple of exceptions ...

I like the idea of going to back to the upside-down pyramid. Government should serve us and some issues should remain at local and state level (I think the potheads in Colorado and Washington might agree with me).

The only thing the federal government truly needs to be concerned with is our national security and general welfare (We'd need to finally define that one!).

Democracy is the only way (in my mind) for adults to govern themselves (and isn't what this country was supposed to be about? Americans, governing themselves?).

kdsub -> RE: Solution to the Problems with American Government (2/21/2014 4:35:05 PM)

Ok how about this....Have any legislation, outside of national defense or immediate national emergency, voted on and passed through mass media only become law when it is voted on a second time 12 months later.

That should give time for plenty of debate and nullify impulsive decisions.

Until the government gets out of a few countries, we can't do a damn thing.

I got a brother in Afghanistan as an independent contractor...have not heard from him in quite a while. Afraid he is on lock down. Also his company does not want to pay his hazard pay (which would pay on his house).

Maybe we should get a third party in the WH.

This is what I came up with to solve our problems in the US.

1) First we annex to Canada. We issue health care to every citizen, and put propaganda in every home with indecent media-controlled television.

2) We sit around at Tim Horton's with the elderly, who are determined to tell you how to vote.

3) Every citizen votes on every item that comes up that needs a national vote. Failure to vote means that you are subjected to bitching sessions at water coolers and have rotten legislation thrown at you.

I don't think this will last long, maybe a couple of months, then we go back to the system we have now, and everyone can quit bitchin about the government. If the common citizen is not willing to be more Canadian, then they can shut the fuck up, eh.

I fixed it for you.

Our founding Fathers missed one item, the career politician. In their day they served as Patriots, today they serve to get rich - very rich. obombas worth increased tenfold in his first 3 years in office. Feinstien was discovered war profiteering - her punishment she resigned from the committee she headed that sent contracts to her husbands companies.
Here our local politicians play musical chairs and manage to stay in political seats for decades due to weak term limit rules.
4 years max in any political office. Low pay not tied to minimum wage, no per diem, no H&W no pensions get the greed out of politics.
Will it happen, NO. Tooooo many on the govt dole; govt employees, govt contractors, welfare, etc. Remember how many voted for obomba because they got a free phone.
One solution, become familiar with the tax laws and DEFUND GOVT.
