ORIGINAL: Musicmystery Damn. Now I can't Xerox stuff either. Or have the maid hoover up the dirt on the carpet... Sometimes we do get a specific product where the particular name encompasses the whole line, but since Tasers and stun guns work in very different ways, it will never be an accurate description. A Taser is a stand-off weapon, a stun gun is up close and personal. Could "tasing" become the ubiquitious verb to describe temporarily disabling someone with electrical shock? Maybe, as you illustrated with xeroxing, but that term is dying out, and younger person told to xerox a syllabus might have no idea that you wanted something photocopied, without googling it. As it stands, the terms Taser and stun gun are not interchangeable, and only lead to less clarity in reporting. Be the change you think we need, Muse. No argument there. My (mild) beef was with the Kleenex, which indeed has come to mean "tissue." It's interesting from a marketing perspective. One the one hand, when people think of the product, they think of your brand. But when going to purchase, they consider all brands interchangeable despite calling them your brand, with no concept that Kleenex tissues are better in some fashion.
