MrBukani -> Polio, back with a vengeance. (3/10/2014 5:57:03 PM)

"Nigeria and Pakistan are going to be tough. The Pakistan violence is evil," Mr Gates told the AFP news agency. "The truth is the vaccine is to help kids. And spreading rumours and attacking the workers on this... those people don't have justice and truth on their side."

India, which once suffered the most from polio, recently celebrated being three years without a confirmed case. But the disease remains endemic in Afghanistan, Nigeria and Pakistan and there have been new outbreaks in Somalia and Syria. Of the three countries where it is endemic, only Pakistan saw an increase in cases."

What would you do if the life of your child was threatened, by fanatics who don't wanna vaccine their children against diseases?

Lucylastic -> RE: Polio, back with a vengeance. (3/10/2014 6:40:47 PM)

DomKen -> RE: Polio, back with a vengeance. (3/10/2014 6:44:28 PM)

Unbelievable. We can't eradicate polio. I wonder if the anti vaxers would like small pox back as well.

Lucylastic -> RE: Polio, back with a vengeance. (3/10/2014 7:04:27 PM)

We had both virtually eliminated and they stopped vaccinating for them.

No idea which pox virus that is but smallpox really is extinct in the wild. An outbreak would not be small news on a single obscure website.

Smallpox is gone. There hasn't been a case in better than 35 years.

MrBukani -> RE: Polio, back with a vengeance. (3/10/2014 9:15:44 PM)

Chad was the last country that kept vaccinating, but we'll see.

This one better?[:D]

Anyway that is not my problem. My problem is with people not vaccinating and infecting my kids. They endanger the lives and wellbeing of my children. How do I stop this?

Get your kids vaccinated. Make sure every parent you know knows how vital it is that their kids are vaccinated as well. There really isn't much more you can do.

DesFIP -> RE: Polio, back with a vengeance. (3/10/2014 9:59:11 PM)

Insist that the schools not put your kid in a class with a non vaccinated child. That's how you lessen the risk to you and yours.

However, if your kid has been vaccinated, they aren't likely to get the disease should a non vaccinated child come down with it. What is more likely is that your child will transmit it to an elderly grandparent who is no longer immune, not having had a booster in 50 years.

Anybody in your family had chemo in the last five years? They are the ones most likely to get the disease. Or anyone with an auto immune disorder, as typically treatment for that includes drugs to reduce the immune system. Obviously, anyone who had a transplant and is on immune system suppressants is at high risk.

MrBukani -> RE: Polio, back with a vengeance. (3/10/2014 9:59:37 PM)

Or I could bar the bible thumpers from entering my town. Since they refuse to eliminate the threat I have the right to refuse them entry to my property. And forbid any dealings with them that could lead to contamination.

Did some checking. Polio is still on the list of vaccinations for kids under age 6.

Smallpox was dropped as a vaccination. The last documented case of smallpox in the U.S. was 1949. There hasn't been a documented case of smallpox in the world since 1977. (according the the CDC website)

In case you are interested, CDC recommended vaccinations chart:
http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/schedules/index.html

There are other vaccinations that one should have prior to traveling to some countries, especially tropical ones.

Whereas I would like to cure myself from the herpes virus, as well as billions of other infected people, I do am opposed to species extermination - and viruses are species as well.

MrBukani -> RE: Polio, back with a vengeance. (3/11/2014 2:51:06 AM)

Don't worry you can keep them safe in a deepfreezer, just make sure you have an emergency powersupply.

The fundamentalists aren't the problem. In this case it's mostly the new age types. The sort who believe Jenny McCarthy's ignorant blather.

But when I checked for a reference I compared current recommendations with what I had as a kid and commented on some differences.

It seems that most of the problem with disease reservoirs that vaccination programs don't reach is that they are in areas where armed conflict is rampant.
