I heard a long piece about why we don't know where it is on NPR tonight. This isn't it, but covers the same points:

I think it is one of three places;

1> Bottom of the ocean
2> At a terrorist airfield
3> At a pirate's airfield having identifying marks changed so it can be sold.

The lack of any distress signal leads me to think it is 1

First, if it did reverse course as some claim, the transponder would have shown it crossing back over Java.

Second, since there was no transponder signal, the plane either suffered a catastrophic failure or the transponder was turned off, in which it was a hijack.

The ocean's a big place, and if it did go down there, it could take weeks or months before it's found. It took two years for that Air France jet to be located, remember?

This is most likely. Even a small body of water like the South China Sea is actually very big when you're looking for something like a plane.

If the air crew was on the verge of losing control of the cockpit they should have changed the transponders frequency to indicate a hijacking so it is unlikely that either of these occurred without the active collusion of the cockpit crew.

Maybe it ended up on the Island on "Lost"?

I agree with others, I suspect it was some catastrophic failure, like an explosion. If it was terrorists, the thing is that with the cockpit barricaded, it is unlikely the terrorists could overcome the flight crew before they could issue a mayday or something. Planes don't simply lose all power like that easily, they have all kinds of backup systems, the transponder system, you name it, so for it to be lost like that it would have gone down suddenly, which tells me it likely was an explosion of some sort.

It more than likely is in the ocean IMO, but if it went down over vietnam it will take a lot to find it. Vietnam as the poor SOB's who fought there will tell you has mountainous jungle terrain, and finding a plane there may not be so easy. I suspect if they don't find something soon, it probably is in the ocean, and that is going to take a search like they had finding the Titanic, it is a pretty large area if the maps I saw are correct.

I saw this posted on facebook yesterday. I've no idea how correct it is as I know nothing about planes.

http://www.educateinspirechange.org/2014/03/six-important-facts-youre-told-lost-malaysia-airlines-flight-370.html

reading it seemed valid, but there have been planes go down before without trace. the Bermuda Triangle has it happen with all sorts of craft.

The Malaysian military believes an airliner missing for almost four days with 239 people on board flew for more than an hour after vanishing from air traffic control screens, changing course and travelling west over the Strait of Malacca, a senior military source said. Malaysian authorities have previously said flight MH370 disappeared about an hour after it took off from Kuala Lumpur for the Chinese capital Beijing. At the time it was roughly midway between Malaysia's east coast town of Kota Bharu and the southern tip of Vietnam, flying at 35,000 ft (10,670 metres). "It changed course after Kota Bharu and took a lower altitude. It made it into the Malacca Strait," the military official, who has been briefed on investigations, told Reuters.

If the plane had sudden massive decompression, the pilots first priority is to fly the plain, his second priority is to navigate and his 3rd priority is to make ground contact. His co-pilot and his engineer deal with emergency air supplies. Its very possible that everyone became unconscious very quickly (I like to think so ) and continued flying an auto pilot until it ran out of fuel. That though, doesn't explain the change in direction. Could it be that the pilot had changed the flight plan to get it to the nearest runway but became confused before losing air supply.

Another theory is that the plane directly hit something in the air immediately killing the cockpit crew and knocking the plane off course.

If there was a mid air explosion and the plane broke up before hitting ground/sea, then there's a massive debris field somewhere that hasn't yet been found.

We have always had conspiracies regarding the Bermuda Triangle but the Bemuda Triangle is on the wrong side of the world to where this aircraft went missing. The Bermuda Triangle is the triangular region in the western part of the North Atlantic Ocean bounded by Bermuda, Florida and Puerto Rico.

This article states that a black box is an easy thing to find unless its been damaged by catastrophic forces unknown to man. Truth is, the deepest black box ever been traced by signal was South African Airways Flight 295, ... off Chicago, Illinois, Resting in a depth of water at 76 m. Oceans are much deeper than 76 m It took two years to locate the black boxes in much deeper water from Air France 447 but they had a debris field to work with. They knew exactly where to look.

I could read on but the article is all about conspiracy.

please note that I didn't state it was gospel truth. nor did I state that this happened in the Bermuda Triangle, I gave it as an example of a place where craft go missing all the time without trace

the link may be a bit 'out there', but it still has some valid points about wreckage, and the knowledge of where the plane was at the time it went 'missing'. right now, it's probably as valid as any other stuff out there because no-one knows what went on with that plane except for the people on it.

Mysterious aircraft disappearances usually boil down to either mechanical, pilot, weather, or a bunch of time traveling women who are taking the passengers to the future so the human race can survive on another planet (see Millennium.)

Once an aircraft gets a certain distance from land, there are no radar installations to track the aircraft across the ocean. Along this aircraft's flight plan there are no land masses of appreciable size, and oil slicks are not always found.

The Bermuda triangle?

Quite bizarre, I feel terrible for the families.

Lets face it, something has to have gone horribly wrong, and very quickly on that plane. There were three planes hijacked in America, and two hit the twin towers, but look at how many people were able to use their mobile phones and get messages out to loved ones, as well as a whole host of other stuff.

I feel for all the people involved, but especially those waiting at home to hear what really has happened. I just hope for the sake of the people on the plane that it was very quick if they had to die.

Both have been identified and there are no terrorist links. One was an Iranian seeking asylum.

People travel under stolen of forged passports for a variety of reasons, eluding police, fleeing an oppressive regime, planned disappearances, and of course an American woman with a Kenyan born child traveling to Hawaii in 1961 so the boy can grow up to be president.

Actually you can get a real passport with a false ID, the process is complicated, but not impossible.

In the US, one looks through the Social Security death data base for a recently deceased person matching you age, race, sex and as close to your actual birthday as possible.

You acquire this person's birth certificate, apply for a lost ss card, driver's license and other necessary documents to get a passport. When you consider how overwhelmed the bureaucracy is monitoring this information, it is rarely caught. You can get away with this as long as you are never fingerprinted.

I didn't know this and it sounds easy if you know the right people or what you're doing.
