The ex liked it made with dried beef. I think it was something his father picked up a taste for during WWII when it was made with chipped beef, not ground.

Personally, I'm not much for gravy. It's used to moisten something that's too dry to eat plain.

The Man believes in the supremacy of breakfast sausages and pancakes or waffles, not eggs.

That was the Romans who would sell the burger via street vendors ;-)

I'll grant that the Americans probably invented burgers (Yay!!), but as for 'civilized' food??

Wiki disagrees with you.

Etymology
The hamburger is named after Hamburg, Germany.
The term hamburger originally derives from Hamburg, Germany's second largest city, from which many people emigrated to the United States. In High German, Burg means fortified settlement or fortified refuge and is a widespread component of place names. Hamburger, in the German language, is the demonym of Hamburg. Similar to frankfurter and wiener, names for other meat-based foods, being demonyms of the cities of Frankfurt and Vienna (Wien), respectively.

The term "burger", a back-formation, is associated with many different types of sandwiches similar to a (ground meat) hamburger, using different meats, such as a buffalo burger, venison, kangaroo, turkey, elk, lamb, salmon burger or veggie burger.

History of the hamburger
Main article: History of the hamburger in the United States
The hamburger, a ground meat patty between two slices of bread, was first created in America in 1900 by Louis Lassen, a Danish immigrant, owner of Louis' Lunch in New Haven, Connecticut. There have been rival claims by Charlie Nagreen, Frank and Charles Menches, Oscar Weber Bilby, and Fletcher David. White Castle traces the origin of the hamburger to Hamburg, Germany with its invention by Otto Kuase. However, it gained national recognition at the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair when the New York Tribune namelessly attributed the hamburger as, "the innovation of a food vendor on the pike". No conclusive claim has ever been made to end the dispute over the inventor of the hamburger with a variety of claims and evidence asserted since its creation

The Romans apparently created a meat pattie which they used to sell with bread via street vendors. Recipes can be located online, I'm sure. I'll consult a friend of mine that's an historian but that won't be until tomorrow at the earliest. While Wiki is a great resource for information, it is submitted to by a great many laypersons. If I'm wrong I have no problem with that, I'd like to know with authority one way or the other just as a matter of historical significance and not b/c I want to be right.

MissMorrigan -> RE: A question for the gourmets out there (3/17/2014 1:22:05 PM)

I think i would prefer ground beef 'dry' with all the spices added. If it's with proper gravy and not a white sauce then I'd want bread to sop up all that gravy. The closest I've had insofar as having eggs with ground beef is when I made a Bobotie pie which, I believe, is South African. The egg topping made me very sick just b/c of the texture, I think!

Just based on the responses in this thread alone, when I take over the planet, my secret police are going to be busy rounding up people for the re-education camps, and proper food items is going to be a priority.

MissMorrigan -> RE: A question for the gourmets out there (3/17/2014 2:01:53 PM)

That made me laugh so hard then, which I realise probably wasn't the desire response! When you run the planet you won't need secret police, silly! ;-)

I must admit, it wouldn't surprise me in the least if the Romans or even some other earlier culture "invented" a ground-meat patty slapped between lumps of unleven bread.

But a (legit) white sauce labelled as "gravy"?? Uh-uh. Not in a zillion years.

So if those suvverners were served a proper Béchamel sauce, would they risk life and limb by insulting the chef and calling it 'gravy'??
Sheeesh!! They got more balls than I have! [:D]

Sure I will need a secret police, even if it is to have people who have never heard of Styx, Aerosmith, Bob Seger, or any of the great musical artists of the past century (meaning of course the rock and rollers and heavy metal groups from the sixties, seventies and eighties.)

Ask me to name "any of the great musical artists of the past century (meaning of course the rock and rollers and heavy metal groups from the sixties, seventies and eighties.)" and I can 100 trillion percent guarantee that the names "Styx, Aerosmith, Bob Seger" won't be coming to mind.
Beatles, Dylan, Cash, Hendrix, Bruce, Van Zandt (Townes, not Ronnie), Young, names like that I can live with.
But Styx?
Oh, Hell no.
Next thing ya know you'll be tossing Foreigner in the mix.

OK, but just remember you just suggested on this thread that (paraphrased) Taco Bell and McDonald's should be considered some fashion of "good" food.

littlewonder -> RE: A question for the gourmets out there (3/17/2014 3:03:46 PM)

growing up it was chipped beef in a milk gravy. My dad would make it all the time and stink up the house. Gross.

And ZZtop? Stevie Ray Vaughn?

Besides, if I am running the planet, that kinda gives me the power to judge who are and are not great artists, now with the exception of Cash (my parents had every freaking record he ever put out, and I heard him so much that I liken it to torture.)

No, I said that the UK had imported them. There had to be some demand or market research to indicate that these establishments would be profitable. McDonald's, burger king, taco bell, wendy's, taco bueno, or even long john silvers is a last resort. It is nothing more than fast, hot and palatable junk food. Most of the hamburger joints reheat their burgers in microwaves, or if not that, leave the damn things under warming lights for 15 minutes. The only way to get a fresh meal at those places is to make a special order.

As for taco bell, on one hand you can call it comfort food, on the other, heart attack fuel. I can make leaner, healthier tacos and similar items at home.

Do not get Me wrong. I actually like Aerosmith. With that said, even at 52, I much prefer hard shit... Pantera, Bio-Hazard, Suicidal tendencies, Onyx, Metallica, Korn. And some not so hard shit, but a little obscure for most like Frank Zappa. Grew up on the Beatles and Led Zeppelin. Just saying.

My secret police are going to round up anyone who discusses "any of the great musical artists of the past century (meaning of course the rock and rollers and heavy metal groups from the sixties, seventies and eighties)" without mentioning Sabbath.

I leave for a few hours, and the conversation goes from white GRAVY! to secret police and heavy metal bands. Groovy.
