Actually, I always get copies of my lab wor from my primary. It got a little screwed up this last time because I had the absolute worse migraine of my life when I went in for that follow up. Vit D labs typically come in seperate because they take longer and he didn't have them (they also tend to forget to include them when they send to the dr). Anyway, I grabbed them when I went to see my podiatrist because he and endo are same group.

I always know when my Vit D is low, because my pain levels increase. It seems to always be low unless I am taking a supplement. So I knew it was an issue and that's one reason I went back to primary. It was 11! So now I am on a twice weekly mega dose as well as a daily smaller dose.

I never connected hot flashes to Vit D before. But mine are nothing like you describe.com. no dizziness or anything, just a sudden welling up of heat and then sweating.

Tj,
Since I'm diabetic, there aren't a whole lot of "hidden sugars" in my diet, and I can't just willy nilly try fad diets without really talking with my diabetes team about it, but thanks for the info.

As for the chillow, this is way beyond what something like that would help.

No Graves, large lump.

I'm on insulin for the diabetes, because while diet and exercise can be helpful, I'm past that point and need extra.

Thyroid issues are not solved solely by changing your diet, ther is always medication involved.

I'm just not patient and want to be able to where season appropriate clothes and be comfortable

I'm sorry lw that the Estrovin didn't work for you. As for the menopause test, I went through that with doctors in the past. At 32, when my periods first got really whacky, the doctor said I was too young and wouldn't test. I should have insisted. Like you, my view is WTF since while I was young, it isn't like early menopause is unheard of and especially with me, since I'm adopted and have no family history for comparison.

I'm doing my best to wait it out to see if the methamazole helps, but patience isn't my strong point, lol. Especially with this. Although my next blood work will include the FSH. Endo didn't balk about it at all, although I will be 50 this year, so that may play a part. Ever since I had the breakdown in his office, things are working really well with hiim, thank God.

Mummy, I would love to try silk sheets, but as you said, theye are expensive.

Des,

I never get to the heavy sweater layer, lol! I wear summer pajamas, and have a shawl I keep handy all the time for those very few periods of cold. When I'm cold, I refuse to do more than the shawl because I know it won't last, but that chilled positiion (shoulders hunched) is havoc on the arthritis in my neck.

Its not about a fad diet, its about reducing the food that could be causing problems.. its about eating real food.. PBS isn't prone to promoting fad diets.. these are the notes I made during one of PBS's marathons where Dr Hyman spoke.. I think its a hard diet for most people simply because so much of our food today is processed and imo fat and sugar and salt are addicting and the food manufacturers have deliberately produced food to get people hooked.. This is the bare bones of his 10 day detox but you would have to read his website or book or listen to his vids to know if he allows some of the food back in and in what amounts.. Dr Oz had him on his show and they tried his diet on some willing subjects, they all seemed to lose several pounds in just 10 days, and feeling better.. But only you can decide if its right for you.. I just disagree that its a fad diet.. lol I know when I stopped eating processed food it cured the incredible back pain I had (which was due to inflammation due to the processed food)..

First, I'm not sure why you think I eat a great deal of processed foods. Second, just because doctor Oz has him on his show, doesn't mean its not a fad diet.

There has been a lot of talk regarding the whole gluten free craze and if you don't have celiacs, gluten doesn't cause inflammation.

While I do buy as many fresh vegetables as my budget allows, they are expensive and canned and frozen do follow his whole "no less than 5 ingredients" theory.

Contrary to popular belief, cutting out all carbs is not proper or good for diabetics. Things like Atkins, which promotes the concept of ketoacidosis is not good. For a diabetic, ketoacidosis can be a life threatening condition. In theory, I love the idea of Atkins (bacon anyone?), but for me, its simply not a healthy diet. On the other thread where Istar talked about eating 3-4 pounds of bacon a week, I was mouth watering jealous. I love bacon, lol.

I'm glad this diet has helped you with your pain issues, but with multiple health problems, there are just many places I don't go.

With it being at 11 (shit I ended in the hospital with it being slightly under 10) I hope they got you on depot shots and 5000 units a day, you are seriously dangerously low. The vitamin D also influences your estrogen levels, by no means they should let it drop anywhere under 50 and you've been on the supplements for a while now, haven't you? With the thyroid problems your levels should be kept at 150.

If you are taking any thyroid meds, make sure you have several hours in between before you take D supplements, as taking them too close together can cause kidney stones.

Effect of Vitamin D on Night Sweats

Vitamin D increases the amount of calcium your body absorbs. This not only helps to prevent bone loss, a serious consideration during menopause, but also can reduce the effects of hot flashes and night sweats by helping to regulate calcium uptake. Calcium is important in many of your body's functions, including muscle function and hormone and blood pH balance.

My former wife had hot flashes really bad. She really did not have major medical issues other than a hysterectomy with 1 ovary left in.

For sleeping the only solution we were able to come up with is a ceiling fan turned on high ever night and changed the sheets to silk the bed cover to silk. Silk tends to breath better but still keeps a person warm. When a hot flash started she would simple throw off the silk cover and some times the topsheet. It is not a perfect solution by far. But silk rapidly dries and creates a cooling effect as it does. The downside to silk is that it is expensive. The best kinds will say Mulberry..

You can get a somewhat cheaper alternative at up market camping shops - it's a wicking nylon that's also used for towels, sometimes going under the brand name Pertex. Also at such shops: a silk thermal layer of underclothes which will work as pajamas in hot weather as well as underclothes in the cold.

Re losing body heat from the head and feet - yep, that's useful knowledge. I keep a spray bottle next to the bed in summer - spraying my feet with cold water is instant bliss.

Peon,
I cannot believe I forgot about the camping stuff. Great suggestion. I actually carry a silk sleeping bag liner with me on my trips to the UK. The UK always has those big bulky comforters and no sheets on their beds. Way to hot in the summer time for me. The silk sleep bag liner does wonders.

So I have this stuff called "hypercare," its for people with hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating). Last night after I showered, before I was even dressed, I was sweating (I feel your pain lw!). I don't use the stuff often since the sewating has caused some rashes and then the Hypercare burns like a mother.

Last night, I said fuck it, I'm tired of dripping and having damp clothes all the time. So I put it under my arms, under my breasts, that place where your thighs meet you hip and that horrible "pooch" courtesy of my son who was nearlt ten pounds at birth. I even put some on my forhead. I worried about the possible burn and rash, but as many of you can understand, I'm desperate for some relief.

So very little burning (thank God) but even better, those areas remained dry all day! I still had the hot lfashes but no dripping sweat. Obviously I need to talk to my doctors about any dangers (its meant for underarms. But the relief! Only got damp hair roots and sweat dripping down my back.
