jlf1961 -> Good question (4/9/2014 6:54:16 PM)

After watching Space Seed, the episode where Kirk marooned Khan and his followers, I noticed that Chekov was not in the episode.

This brings up a problem with the Wrath of Khan.

How did Chekov know of the Botany Bay and Khan, and how did Khan recognize Chekov?

Well, considering how many times Kirk violated the Time Travel Prime Directive, I imagine they must have met each other at least once.

The problem with writers who don't do research.
In Final Frontier they forgot that Kirk had a brother.
And I think Shatner was the writer.

Didn't khan study up in the ship's computer data base? He was a "super human genetic experiment" highly intelligent, he could have studied the crew.
As far as chekov, wouldn't he have been on board in the crew and aware of this although not featured in the episode?
George Takeii wasn't in that episode either btw.

The In-Universe answer is that Chekov was still assigned to the Enterprise but not yet part of the Bridge crew (and thus, would not have appeared in any episodes).

The popular fan joke is that Chekov kept getting space sick during the First Season and kept having to run to the bathroom. When Khan was on board, Chekov apparently was in the bathroom too long and kept Khan waiting. When Chekov finally came out, Khan was so pissed and vowed that he would never forget him.

It's a continuity error: there's no point trying to "explain" it.

In the Trekverse, there is no such thing as a "continuity error." Everything has an explanation.

This is why Whovians and other breeds of SF nerd tend to look down on Trekkies, you'll find.

Ouch! I don't know a single Trekkie who isn't also a Whovian. Why the hate? Can't we all just "nerd" along?

But that's part of the fun!

And Trekkers also look down on Trekkies. [;)]

perhaps not, but I know plenty of Whovians who aren't Trekkies.
Hence my point.

The original Star Trek was renowned for it's shoestring budget and lack of continuity.

Totally off topic though, Jeff, I know you read David Drake. But do you also read David Weber, the Honor Harrington series? I picked one up and am not sure if I want to read any more of them.
