Here in the UK, elderly couples requiring care are encouraged to remain together provided they can find a home that can accommodate them as a couple. There aren't that many accommodations that can, which is a tremendous shame. One thing is clear, however, we as a society still frown on the elderly having sex and it defies belief that they do face this discrimination. We forget these are people who have led full, productive lives and just because they are now elderly it doesn't mean that they should give up feeling sexual. there is this propensity to treat them as children. We have a couple of cases going on here currently wherein the managers of two unrelated homes have allowed their residents the right to have someone come in to cater for their sexual needs and in the privacy of their private room. Yet, the managers face having their careers in ruins as their professional integrity is called into question. A requirement of person centred care is that the residents can expect a holistic approach to their care, part of which maintains their legal entitlement to autonomy and right to dignity. I see very little of this in practice.
